I recently picked up a nice PC 15-22 with Strike Fire red dot scope, magazines, and case for a price I couldn't pass up. I had been looking for a good deal on a 15-22 for a while but was hesitant to buy the PC model because of a few reports of it being pickier with ammo. I knew I would be upgrading the trigger, grip and stock on a base model 15-22 so when the good deal on the PC version popped up, I decided to take the risk and grab it. I'm happy to say that my worries about ammo functionality were entirely unnecessary.

I grabbed a bunch of different types of ammo for the first test, including everything from higher-end standard velocity target ammo with oily/waxy coating down to cheaper bulk ammo like Winchester M22. It cycled and shot every single type without a single problem, complete with the bolt locking open on even the lowest velocity rounds. For the record, here are the specific ammo types that I tried. I shot at least 50 rounds of each of these.

  • CCI Mini-Mag solids
  • Federal Automatch
  • Winchester M*22
  • Eley Target Rifle
  • Aguila Golden Eagle Target
  • Federal Classic standard velocity
  • Remington standard velocity

I'm entirely impressed with the rifle so far. The trigger isn't up to part with my Anschutz target rifles with the 5018 triggers, but nothing else in the world is up to that standard either. It was really nice for the price, though, and probably what I would have put into a base model 15-22 had I purchased one of those. My only issue was a slight bit of stock wobble with the VLTOR stock, and that was easy enough to fix with a couple strips of electrical tape on the buffer tube to take up the extra space.

I can already tell that this rifle is going to hurt my stash of 22LR ammo in a big way, but I'll be having lots of fun doing it. I'm considering running this rifle instead of one of my pistols in a Steel Challenge match on Sunday, even though I'm not really accustomed to shooting it quickly yet.

Thanks for all the info that I've gathered from this forum before buying this. Expect questions in the future once I run a few thousands more rounds through it. :)

I'm shooting my M&P Pro 9 for centerfire production and can only shoot one other. I'm deciding between this and my customized Ruger 22/45 with reflex sight.
