this is my opinion
if you have no time behind a 1911 as a lefty....
there are issues related to ambi safeties.
they either work or they dont. They can break sometimes because of a weak male/female connection and based on the design, they are not smooth in the area of engagement as on the standard side, because sometimes the connection is either loose or slips off causing a binding or sticking when trying to engage on the weak side.
in the area of cosmetics, the ambi side lever will scratch your frame.
with that said, as a lefty...you can still manipulate the thumb safety with your left trigger finger as you come off the decision to not fire or place the safety on.
I have an ambi lever on my duty gun as that is how it came from the factory. my plain clothes carry, I had a ambi for years and decided to take it off and opt for single side. it was an ed brown unit and as much as I would snug the female connection, it would open up again and was never smooth in the area of function from the lefty side.
I plan to order two additional competition 1911s in the near future...both will be with single side safeties.
as a lefty with a gun designed for a righty, the thumb safety, mag release and slide lock lever are on the right side. unless the gun comes equipped with a ambi...you as a lefty can overcome any issues related to right hand use with no changes to the gun.
with that said, if you want an ambi....make sure the connection between both sides are snug (interference fit) were the ambi lever would not work its way out.
