Performance Center 629 v-comp

Hello my fellow enthusiast.
I just bought a V-Comp w/ 4" barrel for this seasons upcoming bowling pin shoots in my area.
For the love of me, i can't find a load that will group under 6" @ 27 ft./shooting off a benchrest.
I'm using a 240 gr. lswc and have tried just about every combo of powder from 2400, bullseye, herco, unique,231 and 3 or 4 more.From minimum to maximum. tried light crimp, no crimp and heavy crimp. I am starting to get disgusted with even looking at it.
question is. does anyone own one of these and what is a good accurate load you use with the bullet weight i described.
any help will be greatly appreciated .

never mind, i traded it off . that particular model was the worst piece of junk i have ever wasted my $$$ on. S&W really let me down on that one and i own a few S&W's, quite a few..will probably buy some more in the future but, no more performance center krap.
the removable compensator sides didn't even match up flush to the shrouded barrel, lots of lead leak between the comp and shroud, i had to take a hammer and knock it loose after soaking it in kano-kroil.
never did shoot under a 6" group with any bullet powder combo...i sure wish someone would have warned me..oh well..

heres a little follow up ditty...
i bought a 4" Redhawk for half the price of the v-comp, fit and finish was perfect, found a little custom ditty on this gun. the lockup locks both front and back of the cylinder..
i shot 1 3/4 groups @ 25 yds off the rest with some PMC 240 grn. lswc.old factory stuff i have. the v-comp wouldn't even shoot a group under 6" at 27 feet, which is our measurement for our bowling pin shoots..
to tell you the truth, i was beginning to think it was my handloads. as they have always been spot on in anything i have ever loaded for.
i ran some 300 grn xtp's i handloaded through it and that pistol amazed me! 13/16" group @ 25 yards.
i can truthfully say that the V-Comp was some kind of Lemon. i am so sorry to the guy i unloaded it on and he will never see my redhawk in action..

You know, I'm sure the factory would have sent out a shipping label for that. I have a 629 Light Hunter that will shoot anything well. No way a PC gun is acceptable with the performance you describe, and I'm sorry you didn't take advantage of the Performance Center's warranty.

Oh boy……I am a new member AND a new proud owner of a 627 V-Comp. I hope that I didn't make a mistake purchasing it? I just assumed if it came from the performance center it would be among the best but from what I'm reading, I could be wrong? I am not a competition shooter but looks are second to accuracy in my book. Tell me I will be ok with this purchase! ANYONE??

Welcome to the Forum!

Not every gun leaves the factory perfect; it is unfortunately just the reality of the current manufacturing regimen. But the only way to know if your gun has any issues is to do a good inspection, and take it out and try it. If there are any issues S&W, and particularly the Performance Center, are capable of excellent customer service.

As far as this thread goes, there are a lot of unanswered questions with the OP's situation, and I almost think this was just a troll post. But, he was shooting lead in a comped gun, and anyone who has any experience with that knows that if the ports are shaving the bullets, you'll have an accuracy issue. This something that I am sure the PC would have taken care of, but some people don't have either the patience or the knowlege to follow through.

There are quite a few forum members with V-Comps, so they may chime in, but in the meantime, you should shoot your gun and let us know how it works- and you probably ought to start a new thread and let this one die.

I really appreciate your input.
And Sir, i am sorry too i didn't take advantage of the Performance Center Warranty. I own 5 other P-Center revolvers and they all shot well right out of the box with any ammo i put through them.
I guess i was frustrated and ran out of patience because of having to send the pistol in and all the time and money to get it right when it should have been right in the first place. One thing i will say is that V-comp had a trigger in it that was smooth as glass... .

I own a 627 v-comp and compete with my self using my PP686.
some days the v-comp wins and some days it doesn't.
But i can assure you that both pistols i mentioned are 2 of the finest crafted and tack driving accurate revolvers i have ever owned.

Well, you got your personal whack in Einstein (Quote: "but some people don't have either the patience or the knowlege to follow through.") so now everyone knows how you are. So that being said, i stated my opinion and we will leave it at that.
I couldn't leave that Pistol alone so i bought another one (pic enclosed.) Took a painstaking breakin approach with it (fire a round clean etc. etc) after breakin i took it home stripped and cleaned, oiled, mounted scope, ready for the next day.
Took it to the range, 4 rounds, had it sighted in @25yds.
Fired 10 6 shot groups @ 25yds with a 240g lcswc with 12.6g AA#5./ Avg. velocity was 1,092fps.The only thing i noticed about the load it's self was just a few un-burned powder flakes. The avg. group size was 1.889" with the best one being 1.074. Set targets up @50yds. Fired 5 6 shot groups that measured on avg. 2.445". i felt like i was getting somewhere with that Pistol and it was performing as it should.(which is how all my S&W revolvers do).
I was liking what i was seeing so i then proceeded to use my super accurate secret fantastic amazing pet handload that i fire in my other .44's to see if it measured up. And it did.
Not only is this particular Performance Center Revolver accurate, the fit and finish was flawless too. So this one has no issues. I can truthfully say that the Ruger i bought to replace the first V-comp doesn't shoot this well, i never could shrink the group under 2" no matter what combo of powder/bullet i used so i am a happy camper.
One more thing, the ocl on the load i mentioned is crucial for performance and efficiency of burning off All the powder in a mild load with AA#5. i have took that load down to 10.5g's using win. mag. primer ocl. 1.560". it performed flawless, very mild recoil. I never crono'd it but some day i'll remember to do that...i hope...

Dave, you don't know me and I don't know you, other than what's been posted here. Sorry you took the "some people don't have either the patience or the knowlege to follow through" line personally...just so you're clear, I have been there and done that, so my reference to this kind of reaction is just as much about my own experience as it as about yours. V-Comps

Hard to believe a Performance Center gun could be bad!!!
I have a 629 V-Comp, a 625 V-Comp, a PC 500 S&W Mag, as well as PC 945 and these are on a par with both my Freedom Arms revolvers in fit, finish, and accuracy. I haven't found a load that does not shoot well and some which shoot extremely well...even cast lead with gas checks,.... but the 629 V-Comp seems to prefer hot loaded jacketed bullets.

Waking up an old thread...
Having recently purchased two (one new, one lightly used but a dozen years old) PC V Comps, it's a bit disappointing to hear the notion that, 'not all the items that leave the S&W PC can be expected to work perfectly'. Notwithstanding that nothing ever works perfectly, I actually do expect each and every PC gun to work with extreme accuracy and quality. It's one of the reasons why one pays the price for these guns. Hand built, hand tuned, each tested and so on. Short of something getting damaged in shipping (and that is just hard to imagine happening at a measurable rate), I really to expect each and every item shipped to work to the level of quality that Smith advertises.
It's really disappointing if that isn't true.
