What is the Performance Center?
What does it mean when a gun is labeled Performance Center?
Is a model 25-5 a performance Center gun?

Thanks

The PC is an off production line, semi-custom manufacturing arm of S&W. Exclusive models with enhancements. Here is how S&W defines the PC:

"ABOUT PERFORMANCE CENTER

From hand cutting to fine tuning for precision, Performance Center firearms are top performers. Products from the Performance Center are the ultimate expression of old-world craftsmanship blended with modern technology.

Feature-rich and enhanced for better performance, our firearms maintain production line integrity. Whether you're shooting a pistol, revolver, or rifle, you can be sure your Performance Center gun is made with a close attention to detail for your best shot yet."

I am not aware of a PC version of a model 25-5. If there is one somebody will chime in. PC guns usually have the PC logo roll-marked on the L/S of the frame.

Adios,

The current PC offerings generally swap out some of the pieces of standard models for improved designs.
Parts such as triggers, hammers, barrels, cylinders, sights, and grips are changed, as well as smoothing the internals.
To me, the difference in usability is enough to justify the price increase.

The 25-5 is not a PC gun, but certainly worth owning

The PC has been around for quite some time. There are some different designs and enhancements. The PC build is supposed to allow for fit and finish that standard production lines do not allow for. They do turn out some nice stuff. However, the PC label is not a label of assuredness that there will be no problems with your new gun.

A lot of us feel that the Performance Center ended around the turn of the 21st century.... prior to that the PC's gunsmiths "hand built" special guns... think Wilson Combat.....in small runs.

At the time they sold for about twice their factory cousins..... Shorty-9 vs a 6906.

Today it's just a name.... see bigwheelzips post.

The Performance Center means something different now than it did from around 1991 to roughly 2010. In that period of time, the Performance Center was a separate facility with a small group of very talented craftsmen that were tasked with building very specific Performance Center models. These guns are beyond the quality, craftsmanship and fitting of normal production guns.

At some point shortly after about 2010, the real Performance Center was dismantled. It was at this point where S&W started using the PC logo as a mark for full production guns with certain extra features, many of which are simply visual features. But going forward, the actual guns are no better designed nor fitted.

The real Performance Center was lightning in a bottle and the guns built in this era are special, and often quite expensive.

Thanks for the definition as well as your experience and insight.
