PETERS 38 S&W SPL

You have heard of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, they would hide from the law at the Hole In the Wall, Wyo, which is close to Outlaw Canyon. I found this shell casing and bullet in the Canyon about 30 years ago. I was wondering if it could be from their time era?
The casing says: PETERS 38 S&W SPL and is very corroded. Any ideas?

BEWyo - Welcome to the Forum. You have a 38 Special casing that was first introduced in 1899, so unlikely it was made before the 1900s. I am not sure when jacketed bullets were introduced by Peters, but in the 1800s and early 1900s, they were lead only.

Therefore, they it is very unlikely that they were shot by Robert LeRoy Parker or the gang, since he was done by 1901 when he headed for South America. He might have died in 1908.

That Peters shell casing is probly from the late 20's to the early 30's i would say. Peters had a plant in Ohio from 1916 to about 1933 till Remington bought them out.Then they became Remington-Peters if this helps...

I have a couple hundred Peters cases from the 30's that I still reload!

That bullet was refered to as a 158gr LRN 'metal point.Same as the standard 158gr LRN but with taht copper cap over the nose. Supposedly gave better penetration of auto body and windshields. I think they were offered till the early 80s.

Your cartridge could be fairly recent, as I believe the "PETERS" cartridge headstamp was in use up until the early 1960s, when it, and the "REM-UMC" headstamp, were consolidated into a single "R-P" headstamp. I don't think Remington has sold "Peters" branded ammunition in over 40 years. The last time I remember seeing any was in the late 1960s, in .22 LR and shotshells. They may have made small runs since then just to preserve the copyright. I know Winchester has done that with the Western brand.

Two years ago in Reno, the sporting good store I go to had a pallet of brand new cases of..................

12 Ga, 3 dram #8, Peters "Blue Magic"
These have not been around for years !! I have actually had shooters ask if I might sell them some of the old hulls and the original box.

It would really be something if they got the old head stamps out for the old Peters Brass !!

Back in my Skeet days, I preferred the Peters Blue Magic plastic shells. For some reason, they seemed to reload better than the others, i.e., the crimp looked better and cases lasted longer. I was using them up to the early 1980s.
