So I scoured through and tried to absorb as much as I could from the "take better pictures of your firearms" thread. I don't have a fancy pants digital SLR, but I do now have a 14 megapixel Sony Cybershot point and shoot. I have the flash turned off, use a tripod, set the timer so I'm not shaking the camera, lighting is by daylight rated CFL's, and I may just be using an Inova for a prop rod but at least it's not laying on its side anymore. I think this is as good as it gets without spending big bucks. It at least makes "Old Nasty" look not so bad:

So are there any other tips or tricks I'm missing here? And why does the end of the barrel always still look out of focus???

How many CFLs and what wattage (equivalent) are you using?
I use 3 100 watt equivalent in the aluminum reflector, no shadow box although I made one and it's a pain.
Do you have the Cybershot set to max pixels and are you on the Macro setting.

I'm also using three 100 watt rated CFL's. Yes, it's set to max resolution. I'm using a setting called "Twilight" (I've come to really dislike that word) as it has the least amount of white wash in the pics. The actual macro setting even with all the lights turned off washes everything out with white light for some reason.

Oh, and I forgot... It's a DSC W370.

I find the gun can look a little better by adding some angle to it (but mine's still a bit fuzzy)...but your shot is fine...so you'd never get a job at Playboy, but then again, most of us wouldn't...heck...they're only guns...

With blued guns, the biggest problem is the glare...it always looks like bluing wear...this 17 has a perfect finish...
