photo of my new no dash 629

I have a MOD-6291 that is pinned but not recessed.
Serial number is N837339. It is obvious looking at the stampings that it was originally destined to be a 629. The 1 is a bit bigger of a stamp than the 629 part. It is on the list.
That is amazing, my 4" pinned and recessed is
N 837845. My transitional 4" pinned but not recessed is
N 872196, the frame is marked 6291.
The factory must have been humming right along to get these guns out the door. If you can post a photo, it would be appreciated.

Posted here is a picture of my MOD629-4 Square Butt 44 Magnum. As you state above, since this is MOD629 stamped, do you think this is an early Square Butt N Frame (before 1982) that was used by S&W before the closed them out and went to Round Butt N Frames in 1988 or 1989??
Thank you for all the great 44 MAG info.

No, not at all, but your 629-4 is a great version of the 629 and you're lucky to have one of the 4-inch square-butt guns, IMO. I believe the -4 guns were made with both square- and round-butt frames from then-current production.

It seems like there was no set rules as to what frame was used at any certain moment. There is a clearly marked 629 on one of the auction sites that is recessed but not pinned. At least I think that's the deal. The pictures were not real clear on the cylinder but it was a 629 no doubt.

I also have a friend that has a 629-1 with pinned barrel no recess.
I need to get him to give me his serial number. I believe his is stamped
M-629-1.

I will try to get some pics up.

Just talked to my bud about his 629-1.
It is marked MOD-6291 like mine .
6 inch with pinned barrel and not recessed.
His serial number is N 871282.
It seems a bit strange how the numbers for the transitionals seem to be
all over the place.

The transitional guns are very interesting to me. Seems to be quite a few of them too. The ones with a pinned barrel and non recessed cylinders seem to pop up more often than guns built the other way.
If anyone else has a transitional you could add to the list, it would be appreciated.
Thanks for the update peepaw.

I have a square butt stamped "MOD-629" no dash, recessed but not pinned in 8 3/8". Serial No. N8824XX

I have a 629 no dash or #, 8 3/8 bbl, recessed, not pinned, SN:N876216 I bought new in early 1982, display case and blue box. I guess this is a "transitional"??

This thread will never die...

Chris, I called S&W Customer Service today with some serial numbers. The gentleman at S&W could only give me a ship date year for my 629.

N85390* 1982

That's awesome!

Speaking of not dying, maybe the Tin Knocker could shoot us a few pics???

You're a sly one Chris! I guess I should feel privileged to have two no dash 629s. :D Now I need to find the brother to your 4"er.
Here's my 8 3/8"er and 6"er.

I missed this thread

the first time around. I managed to accumulate 3 629 no dash guns about ten years ago. They are all P&R and are 4, 6 and 8 3/8". Both the 4 and 6" guns are well used but the 8 3/8 gun came NIB with shipping sleeve, wood case, etc.

The serial numbers are: 4" N 854900
6" N 855027
83/8N 840522
These guns were bought when few had interest in the early 629s even if they were P&R. Prices were very modest. Sorry I don't do pics.

I have a Model 629 no dash oddity. I own one, serial number N875472, marked in the yoke cut-out MOD-629 over the serial number. It is LOWER than Doc44's factory 5 inch M-629 with serial number N875528.

What is strange is mine has an 8-3/8 inch barrel, a counterbored or recesssed cylinder but NO BARREL PIN.

Then I have a Model 629 no dash serial number N869707, which is a 6 incher that is both pinned and recessed.

Kind of odd trying to figure out when what was done and why and then shipped.

I find it odd that the pin on mine was discontinued so much earlier than guns that still were having pinned barrels.

I have a friend with one MOD-629 6 incher with serial number about 200 from my 6 incher that has a pinned barrel but non-recessed cylinder, yet there are other later number guns that still have both features present.

Bringing this one back up
There were a few no dash and transition 629's in the no dash Sunday thread.
Hopefully members will take the time to post them here.
This is probably the most informative thread on early 629's with serial numbers and dates. At least I haven't seen a better one.
Please post'em if you've got'em
Thank you
