Traded out my Rock Island Armory 1911 today in favor of the 4506. I have to say, this thing is a BEAST, but Im glad I grabbed it. While I know its going to be slightly more challenging to conceal, its definitely the full sized automatic I want to haul.

Being the son of a Marine combat Veteran, I heard countless stories about the 1911, how it saved my father on multiple occasions in the battle of Hue City among others. The 1911 has always had a special place in my family and I'll likely get another in the years to come.

But....

I never felt comfortable carrying the 1911 in the cocked and locked position. Yeah, I get that it has safeties, that my chances of an ND with a well tuned weapon and reliable safety are nil, but it still sort of had an ig factor - no matter how well it performed at the range. So instead of grabbing the RIA, I'd more often than not tote my model 60 revolver in a Crossbreed. Don't get me wrong, I've never felt outgunned with this classic snub, but I always found myself wanting more.

All in all, I'm psyched to have added what I consider a beautiful, yet useful weapon to my CCW repertoire. I've never been one for polymers and simply SUCK trying to hit anything with subcompact firearms other than my snubbie -- seriously, I had a PPS for a few months and was so pissed at the sight radius and awful MA trigger I gave up on it. Yes, the 4506 is a stainless steel brick, but it digests every kind of imaginable ammo.

Besides, if it was good enough for Vic Mackey and Sonny Crockett, who am I to dispute that kind of cool factor?:D

Steel bricks are good. Steel bricks work. I understand the appeal of a steel brick ever since I picked up a 4006 last year.

I think there may be a 4506 in my future.

Pics?

Eloquently put KZ, some say there a throwback to another time, tere outdated, there heavy, lack capacity, clunky, and have to many parts that might go wrong.
Yeah "they" say a lot of things! But what I know is in a world of uncertainty and of poly guns having "growing pains" it's nice to know that there are these "throwbacks" that work all the time everytime, and for three generations kept those who carried them safe!
The 4506 is a "BEAST" but when you need it, it works and makes the badguy wish he/ she/ they had stayed home!
Like my sig says:' Long Live the 3rd Gen!" and with a modicum of care they generally do! Dale

If you don't mind me asking, did you trade trade this through a dealer? I only ask because I am in desperate need of a 4506 and I'm wondering if they had any more than your fantastic trade?

Not at all. Where I live, MA, its exceedingly hard to buy handguns that you want- we have all sorts of restrictions on new firearms so the good ones are left to the trader/used market. I found my 4506 on northeastshooters.com - the dealers only had 9mm (but never a 5906, my second choice) or .40, which I don't care for.

Im looking for a good IWB holster and will likely buy a Miami Classic shoulder rig (yeah, Don Johnson) for it. After that, maybe in a year, I'll grab a second 4506. I think the polymer market will always have its place, but I am nearly certain that people will come back to the 3rd Gen Smiths - the quality, craftsmanship and accuracy of these giant bricks is simply unmatched in today's market.

Congratulations on your new acquisition.
I am more of a revolver guy, but I do have three 3rd generation S&W semi-autos.
A 5906, a 4006 and a 4506.
The 4506 is by far my favorite semi-auto.
It is an awesome gun, and fun to shoot.
You are going to love it.

Stu

Yeah, I feel ya with the restrictions cause I live in the "Vampire State" next to you, but MA is still a lot worse with the handgun restrictions. Ill have to keep an eye on that website for my 4506. For an IWB holster, IMO Desantis is the best with its cozy partner or sof-tuck. Both are super comfortable to carry large frame handguns. Im of large stature and I have no problem carrying my M&P45 in the sof-tuck which I modified with the Galco Y Hook for more stability and just because I cant stand metal J hooks on IWBs!

My 4506-1 is my favorite because of its reliability and soft recoil due to its weight.

Do you have a picture of your modification? I have a Sof-Tuck for my 5" SW1911 Pro and the J-hook just ain't doing it for me.

BTW, big fan of the full-sized 45xx's. Congrats!

Lugged my 4506 around for 12 years and still love it the most. Would not ever want to part with it.
A great reason to live in Texas. Went to a parking lot yesterday looked at a guys S&W, he looked at my KetTec. We showed each other our DL's just cause we should, shook hands and each left with the gun we wanted. No stupid paper trail.

Congrats!

I finally picked one up last month and I love it. My duty sidearm for several years was a 4586 and I quickly came to respect the 3rd gen .45's. Enjoy your new pistol.

I managed to obtain one a few months ago from a very old friend who can no longer shoot due to Lou Gehrig's disease (at 88!!). It amply complements its somewhat elder brothers in my collection, an early 645 and two 745s (with the Millet sights). Not quite as accurate as the 745s but certainly comparable to the 645. Dave_n

:)The 4506 is a sweet sweet tool. I think you're going to be a happy camper. I bought a 4506-1 about one month ago and am very happy to have it. 250 rounds later then qualification for work and no problems at all. I put it beside a 1911 and the size difference was minimal. I put it in an inside the waistband holster and carried it for a day. Same as a 1911 to me. This is a way cool tool. Congratulations on your acquisition. Max
