Picked up a 639

What a great time machine , it appears to have been never fired and racked very little . Great find ,but glad it's yours and not mine. I would feel bad after shooting it thinking about the guy who had it in his safe for 30 years and never did.

Got mine this summer amd would easily put it up against $1000+ handguns. Unfortunately I didnt get all the good stuff like you did, great score!!

Speaking of never fired and racked very little, anyone here buy one new back then ? When I got it home it felt very dry when racked. So as I usually do I cleaned & lubed it. When I got the slide off and turned it over there was a 3 digit number in red on the rail that runs down the center. I don't remember the number, but as I wiped it down with the solvent patch it was gone. Then I thought maybe some kind of assembly mark and possibly only factory fired. Just a guess as this is my first S&W center fire semi auto, and didn't think to take a picture. A DUH moment for sure.

Great find, thanks for pics and info. The gun needs to be shot and enjoyed by you instead of laying in a old box like it has since 84. Best of luck.

Wow, that is a beauty.

I have a 439, and it is a great shooter. If you do shoot that one, you will not be disappointed.

That gun looks perfect. Do you mind if we ask how much it sent you back?

Nice find !
Especially like the small rear site and round trigger guard but that add on left hand safety is an eye sore and probably added later IMO.

You have very nice 639 there. Enjoy your "Brand New" 1984 Model 639. I am a big fan of the 39 series and that one there is a keeper.

Very nice! After at least 5 years of searching I recently acquired a 3913 in same condition. Appeared to have never been fired, box and all paperwork, very dry inside. Tried my best to not let owner know how happy I was.

What's the difference between his 639 and my 539 I bought? Mine is as clean as his (I'll post pictures when I get it Monday) New York makes you amend your permit which takes about a week. I got it because I could no longer safely hold my .44 due to recoil, and the shop owner recommended the 539 because the weight would lessen the recoil. Anyone know what the recoil is like?

Great score, really nice package, well done.
I have the 539 (steel version of the 639) and it's a great gun to shoot, mine being nickel plated.

The 639 were made for only 5 years, I would like to know how many there are, SCSW doesn't say.
With the 539, 8159 were made in 4 years, so simular or a few more would be the guess.
If it were mine I would not be firing it, but that's just me, as I have a few 39's that I can shoot and have fun with.

Cheers.

I have 2 639s (price was right) they are pussycats to shoot. A bit on the heavy side but fun guns. The 539 is a carbon steel blued version of the 639 and harder to find. The 439 was the alloy frame carbon steel slide blued version, about a half lb lighter. As I stated recoil is almost nonexistent with the steel guns .

CONGRATS!! I picked a NIB one last year after passing one up the month before. Have some 500 rounds through mine with nary a problem. The left hand safty is NOT an add on-- that is the way they came. Nice to have another 'ALL STEEL' gun in the safe. :D

OG 639

My 1986 639-original owner with 2000 (at least) rounds thru. Paid $ 372.95 retail. Taught "everyone" how to shoot an auto with this. Retired the gun last year, put the never been on grips back as I shoot others...

Pictured with it's homies...my Vintage S&W's.

Best, Dave

Wetdog, I rarely covet another man's goods, but those photos are making me pretty darned jealous. :) That just looks so right to me - man!

That's a sweet looking pistol! You scored on that one. I don't think I could of walked away from it if the price was any where near reasonable.
