Very happy with this armslist find. Bought from the original owner who shot it a total of 12 times. 6 from each box and he even gave me the remaining ammo. Any info on date of mfg would be appreciated.

The AZH prefix should put it at 1999 but a 66-2 should be 1982-85. The Smith catalog calls these "The Dreaded Triple-Alpha Serial Number Ranges". I'm sure there's someone more knowledgeable than I will tune in and give you a better response. It is a real nice revolver.

I am saving up for a short bbl. current production model 66, if a rear sight can be easily replaced with a fixed one. I am fan of a short barrel model 65, but want a new revolver. I recently bought a new model 60, the short barrel model, like the one I foolishly sold when the semi-auto craze hit.

Thanks everyone for the help.

Do you have any reason why you would not want an old one? I paid less for this one than I would have paid for a new one and it doesn't have MIM parts and IMO is manufactured to a higher standard that S&W just doesn't have anymore.

It even has what I'm told is a rare option, a trigger stop.

In my experience, not all that rare. I have a couple of 17s, an 18, a 48, some 19s, a 15, a 67 and a 66 - all adjustable-sighted K-frames equipped with trigger stops. Many folks have chosen to remove them when the guns are used for self-defense. They can get maladjusted so that the trigger will not come all the way back to the release point, thus making them useless for defense duties.

Shipped in the 70s:

This 66-2, shipped in November, 1983, did not have one, but since I am not the original owner, I don't know if a trigger stop was removed:

Trigger stops shipped standard on adjustable sight K-frames until 1979 and then they went away with .265" service and .312 combat triggers but were still standard with .400" target triggers.

Thank you for that information. It may be in the SCoSW but I don't recall ever seeing it in either of the issues I have. I have two 66-2s, a four-inch with a stop and a six-inch without it BUT the four-inch came with a target trigger and hammer where the six-inch did not so that jibes perfectly with what you posted. Back when I first posted a photo of the four-inch, several others commented about that being a "rare" feature so I assumed it was.

Box looks much newer than a 66-2 and doesn't it say Model 004 i.e. 66-4. Back in the 80s the Target Trigger was also much wider. This one looks like the New Target Trigger supply on the current production model 17s.

Bob,

004 in the top left corner of the box label isn't the Model Number. Look below "model number" where it says 66.

You're insinuating that the gun is not from the 80s but a more recent production? People have dated the gun via the serial number on the gun and box to 1988. I also have a 586-2 from '87 with the same style box.

I don't know how wide the trigger should be on a TT 66-2 but i'm amazed you can see how wide it is from the OP pictures.
