Snout a year ago I responded to an Armslist ad, met the seller, and brought home a Ruger GP100. I was talking to the seller that day and he told me he had more Rugers and mentioned a rimfire collection. I got the impression that he was a Ruger guy. We shook hands and went about our own business and that was that.

Fast forward to yesterday. I saw an ad that caught my eye on Armslist and responded to it. Lo and behold it ended up being the Ruger guy. We both recognized each other, grinned and shook hands, always nice to do business with someone you've done no nonsense business with before. He told me more about his collection, and it turns out he has a pretty good collection of S&W including long barreled rimfire handguns. He also had a model 36 J frame which he had on Armslist and that I responded to. I ended up bringing it home and it really is a beauty. Looks like it was made post flat latch, so late 60s. Serial is 722xxx. No box or paper.

Nice 36. One of my favorite Smiths.
I have owned both a Security 6 and an SP-101. Ruger & S&W make fine revolvers. I like them both!

Lots of us tend to be somewhat eclectic in our taste with sort of shaky "brand loyalty" at times. Even when I was "seriously" collecting pre-War High Standards, I could be tempted by another shiny object! Everybody ought to have at least a couple of Smiths (say a 36 and a 66) a Ruger Blackhwawk or two, a couple of Colt (or clone) 45 acp semis, etc.....

Look! Is that Contender a first model with octagon barrel and an odd caliber? SEE YA!

Froggie :D

When it comes to single action revolvers, I will take a Ruger, especially the old models, any day. Most of the Ruger SAs are fantastic firearms.
When it comes to DA revolvers, it's Smith or Dan Wesson. I, like another poster, had a Security Six as my first "quality" revolver. It was accurate, and shot very well, but just not anywhere as good as the model 19-2 that I traded it for. To me, the Smith and Wesson action is just more smooth compared to the Ruger, and I would guess that has something to do with coil main springs vs leaf main springs.

That said, congrats on the Model 36, it looks very nice. I keep my eye out every trip to the LGS for one I can afford.

Like mainegrw, I do like the Ruger single actions and have owned several of them over the years. A Super Blackhawk was my backup gun for many years when hunting Alaska's outback where grizzlies roam.

When it comes to DA revolvers, however, I prefer the S&W over any other make (big surprise from a longtime Smith collector, I know).

Many years back I had a chance to buy a Ruger SP101 .22 revolver, brand new for half price from a hardware store that was closing shop. A few weeks later, I used it in a local match. I took second place out of a field of about a dozen shooters. But I found that I did not shoot it anywhere near as well as I had been doing with my old K-22. The action just was not as smooth. I still have that Ruger, but it rarely gets fired anymore!

In my book, the square-butt M36 is one of the best guns S&W ever made. It shoots like a bigger gun! S&W and Ruger wheelguns happily cohabitate in my safe. Too many good guns in both catalogs to stand on brand loyalty. I put the grabus on a blued 4" Security Six last year. With pre-medallion Pachmayr grips, it looks great and shoots great.

Would the grooved trigger and checkered hammer on my new model 36 make them a target trigger and hammer?

No. Those are standard hammer and trigger. Target items are wider. I don't know that TT and TH were available on the J frames. I cannot remember ever seeing them, but someone else might know more about this.
