After some looking around at my local gun shops I managed to find a couple of 642-1 no locks (recent production). One shop in particular was asking $579 bottom line. Fortunately I did a little more searching and picked one up elsewhere for $469. Was wondering if that was a decent price considering there aren't many of these newer production no-locks around?

That is not bad. The latest shipment of lock guns at my local store would run you about $550 by the time you paid tax and the state background check fee. I think you did fine.

Thanks for the reply. I had looked at gunbroker.com and saw a pretty wide range of prices for no-locks. Seems like I paid somewhere in the middle. Haven't taken her to the range yet but I'm looking foward to it - It's my first revolver. I currenlty own a 5946 and 3953 and both have performed flawlessly for nearly a decade. Judging by the popularity of the 642 I expect nothing less.

Not the usual choice for a 'first revolver', but a nice one, nonetheless. For what they were made for the little Centennials are hard to beat - I like the several in my stable.

I just paid $475 out the door for a 642-1 no lock. I think you did alright.

It's funny, I was standing at the counter and I was comparing and contrasting each version very closely prior to making my selection, making sure everything was flawless. Some were blued (442), some not, some bodyguard, some centennial, and then the guy on the other side of the counter goes "there's also these you can look at" referring to a stack of 4 642-1 no locks. When I realized what I was being shown, I handed over the cash and that was that. I'm not sure he even realized the difference. I kind of want another one, is that wrong?

What is the date on the fired shell it came with? I am curious if S&W is still currently building no-locks.
I bought 2 last year, and I emailed S&W 6 wks ago if they were going to continue the no-lock 642 & 442, but they never answered.

I bought a no-lock 442-2 on March 31, 2009. The shell that came with it was fired two weeks earlier so it appears they are still building no-lock 442s. The interesting thing is that the case came with the key for the lock, but there is no lock on the gun.

Just picked up a 642-2 no lock on gunbroker.com for $439 + $20 shipping. I also have $25 for my FFL. So, I think you did well.

I just could not find a no-lock anywhere within miles of my residence.

DUNTOV: 03-20-2009

I never thought to look at the date on the envelope.

Do we know:
a) If this is the date it was fired?
b) If this is the date it completed production?
c) Both of the above?

Just saw a new 642 with no internal lock for $469 at my local GS.

FWIW, S&W called to tell me that they were about to ship my repaired 642. I sent in a no-lock and the new frame they're sending back is also a no-lock. I guess the frames are around at the factory.

The salesman was showing me what came with the gun. Here are the instructions, gun lock, the casing, and the key to the lock on the gun. When I got home, I kept looking for the lock, and couldn't find it. I didn't know what to think at first, but then realized how lucky I was that there was no lock on the gun.

Good going JT and all you guys who bought the no lock J frames!!

FWIW, I just purchased a Commemorative (DC v. Heller) Model 442 and it had a lock.

I immediately took apart the innards and ground down the nub on the flag. (No more stupid lock!!)

Nice gun though. Stoned it a little here and there and it ran "smooth as silk" IMHO. (I had the wife work the action after the stoning and she said "not bad". I did good!!

Took it to the range yesterday and it shot as well as I can. You know, that lock didn't malfunction even one time!!

Edit: Oh, it cost $455.00 with tax and shipping.

You did well for that price. When my trusty Model 640's barrel was blown and frame was cracked shooting only 38's out of a 357,S+W sent me a new gun except it had a lock.I just totally ignore it and go about my day.....God Bless......Mike

I bought a brand new 442-2 with no lock on 3/21/2009 at Cabela's (They had it advertised as such in their mailed flyer) for $429 +Tx. It was Mfg: 11/3/2008 due to the coding on the plastic case label (8308 - which means the 308th day of 2008 which was a leap year). The case was also fired on that same date by Richard V @ S&W. The serial 3 letter prefix is DCW, which is newer than the 442-2s WITH a lock that Gander Mtn. is selling today!

Here's a pic as purchased:

I have now added a #405 CT laser grip which is no larger than the Uncle Mike's 'Bantam' grips that come standard. It is a great match for CC!

Here's a pic of it now with my DeSantis Nemisis pocket carry holster:

I have been thinking about 405s for my 642 new production no-lock. Have you shot very much with them and how do you like them?

Yes, I've practiced with them and have I them zeroed for ~21 feet. They are great in relatively low light, and I shoot much more accurately with them then. In bright sun you have to use the iron sights because you cannot see the red dot in bright sunlight beyond about 10 feet.

Another advantage is dry firing inside the house using the dot projected on the wall and getting so that the dot does not move when pulling the trigger - That is very effective in learning accurate shooting technique with the J frame snub!

I want one, too. There are a couple locally for $580 and $560, but I think that is too high. If I found one for $470, I'd do it.
