Picked up a set of Cokes

Indeed...I'll add one other area of recognition, the curved line at the top of the checked area, sometimes called the "smile," appears deeper on the Cokes than on the more commonly seen targets...:)...Ben

Good point - I think that would fall under #2 - the "looks" category ;)

Mine were stupid expensive

Out of curiosity what are a nice set of Cokes going for these days?

I bought a 5 screw pre 29 6" blue in about 97% condition probably 30 years ago.
No box, no tools, not even original grips. Beautiful condition.
It had Pachmayrs on it.
I bought it to shoot and shoot it I do. I shoot cast bullets (H&G #503) with occasional full house loads just to remind me of the power of these guns.
Over the years it just wore on me that I didn't have original grips on it. I watched out for a set of cokes on GB and lost out on one at $450. Some time later another popped up in pristine condition.
I would not be denied.
It wound up costing me $650, and I think I paid about retail. They were perfect and fit the gun both condition wise and fit of the grips.
I hated paying that but they were absolutely new and perfect in all respects.
So....$650. Yes, it hurt but now the gun is right.

Asking a non educated question---just what is the appeal of these "cokes?"
Sometimes just having them around can be appealing......Ben

I found a pair in a grip box at an LGS probably 7 or 8 years ago. Thought they would go well with my first year 57. I asked what they wanted and the guy at the counter said $125. Dang near broke my arm getting the wallet out! Stupidly let the gun and grips go a few years back.....made money on the combo but still, probably never replace them.

I have two guns with cokes. The finish challenged model 29 cost me $1070 a few months ago. (the front sight insert disappeared somewhere between the range and cleaning it at home.)

Almost 50 years ago, I was a young deputy sheriff. I went to a small gun show in East Alabama and laying on a table was a nickel 6 1/2" .44 Magnum. I picked it up and said to myself, "Self: WOW! This feels good!" Looking back, I'm sure it was either a pre or an early M29 wearing Cokes.

Of course, I had no extra money, so it stayed on the table. I was fortunate in that I was toting a M27 that I had had converted to a 6 1/2" .44 Special, so I was well armed. :)
