There is a hole in the frame that holds a pin. There is a machined "flat" spot on the barrel. Once it is installed, the barrel can't turn.

Crush Fit

After 1982, the barrels are screwed into the frame using a "crush fit". Think of it as slightly mismatched threads fighting against each other. It pretty much put an end to fairly easy barrel changes using the old barrel vice and hammer handle.
 
The factory went to crush fit in 1958. The pin was kept until 1981 but there was no reason for it after 1958 other than it was tradition.
