The S&W Model 39 that I was issued in the IL state police academy in 1968, and which I "bought back" when they were replaced by the 439 in 1980, UNTIL I bought a barely-used 1985 S&W 659 at a gun show last fall...it shoots better than I can see (and it has a hammer)...

When it comes to semi-autos, I have always been a 1911 guy. As for revolvers, I have several (+) Smiths and I do believe the one I turn to the most is my 4" model 19.

I love revolvers, but when I carry it's usually my CZ75p01, or the Nano for pocket carry. I prefer the CZ.

S&W automatics have not really caught my fancy. Biggest reason is aesthetics--I do not like the looks of a slide mounted safety/decocker.

Must have blue grips

Glock 19. Im buying a 19 MOS too in a few weeks and mount a FF3. Exactly as photographed, this set up is under the mattress Im laying on. This was my 12 year old son firing it. He loved it. Im never going to be a marksman, the 19 is plenty accurate for me, a do everything gun at a reasonable price. Nothing wrong with M&P series either.

Let me add my two cents.

When my gut tells me that my travels would best be served by a semi-auto, I turn to one of 3: a 1911 when I have a very heavy feeling in my stomach, my 439 when it feels a little uncomfortable, and my Mauser HSc when I am on an extended "Sunday drive".

Honestly, I don't like the concept of the striker fired pistol. The 1911 (45) has had my 6 in "Indian country", so I trust it, emphatically. There is a time and place for first shot DA, but I want my follow up shots SA, because follow up shots (in my book) need to be deliberate aimed fire.

What I like about that line is the YMMV part - we all have our preferences but rwsmith LIKES shooting hammer guns but prefers carrying striker fired guns. That really is your mileage may vary! Honest answer. I like it.

Keeping revolvers out of this as promised, I'd choose a different route:

1. Hammer fired TDA with decocker. I would choose to NOT use the safety if that is an option. Hammer down, decocked, gun ready to fire (like a revolver). So for my mileage may vary the existence of the safety is irrelevant. Unless you practice combat drills intensely and frequently putting a safety on a TDA pistol can get you killed. I have a Beretta 92 and it never would occur to me to put it on safe. It's not safe. Well, the gun is safe. Too safe. The shooter is the one not safe. Again, YMMV.

2. Hammer-fired DAO. I have never used one but to my mind that's a pistol that wants to pretend to be a revolver. I could live with it. (I would not want a DAK - that's just a lot of additional trigger training and I think you had better be a one gun shooter if you use this style of trigger).

3. Striker fired pistol with anything but a "safe trigger". Glocks will never be in my stable. An M&P is a definite maybe but for my overwhelming preference for all metal 3rd Gens so I am disinclined to but a new M&P accordingly. Plus there are still 3rd Gen type pistols available by other makers, some polymer, some all metal.

4. Single action anything. Been there, done that, no longer interested.

I like the comments. Keep'em coming.

I fully understand we're discussing our preferences, but why not?

I've gotten so accustomed to them at work, I actually like Glock....much like a work horse as opposed to a thorough bred.

I have tried the " plastic wonder guns " and the all metal semi auto's , I just don't like them so I don't shoot them . Just give me my S&W 29 4" and I'm good to go . Everytime I go to the range it comes along with me. I had an old pair of PC magna's that I swapped out for the target grips that it had before . I cast /reload and shoot everything from " mild to wild " . My 2nd choice and a close one is my S&W 25-5 4" in 45 Colt . For lack of either of those 2 , give me my 41 mag , 4" or my 357 , 4" . This works for me .

I have 4, 1911's. My favorite pistol. 2 others that I have that are keepers are: Sig P239, 9mm, and IWI Jericho, in .40 S&W. (CZ clone) Both awesome. I have no poly, or double action only guns. Everybody has their own thing! Bob

Reading through the thread...... adding to my earlier post.

ContinentalOp....... I've added the decocker only kit to 2 of my Beretta 92s .... both Centurions........ like the G guns and will probably do a couple more over the next year.

I think Glocks are "good tools"....if I was in a combat/war zone situation...I just might opt for a 19.......... for weight and magazine capacity..... and it's role would be secondary to my rifle. A long time ago I owned a 19 and later took two stabs at 26s.......they worked, shot well..... but didn't like the short light trigger pull in the role of "civilian/ concealed carry"... and didn't spark any pride in ownership....it was just a tool ....like a shovel!!!!

"....snip.....and didn't spark any pride in ownership!!!

You mean when you have retired to your den, with a libation in your hand, the fireplace providing a warm ambiance, your hunting dog at your side and your Browning Superposed on the wall, you don't find yourself lovingly wiping your favorite Glock down with a silicone rag...????? :)

Exactly :) :) Admittedly a very good one too...

That was one of the reasons I had the NY1/"-" connector combo in my Glock 23. The pull weight was about the same as factory stock, but with resistance throughout the trigger pull length, making it more revolver-like. It also made the trigger reset a little stronger. It worked for me. If I were to get a Glock 19, I'd use the same trigger set-up.

Tried the NY trigger......truth is; when I had a choice of which gun to grab and go...... it was a Smith, Beretta or Sig. I've been lucky and been able to accumulate some nice "stuff" (per George Carlin)....... I live in a nice home, drive a nice car/truck.....why not carry a nice gun? I've been carrying the same "stuff" since the early 90s...... too old to change I guess!

Even thought of keeping a G19 for those "s----/dirty jobs days" but I had a Smith 915 for that...... so when someone was willing/wanted to trade a S&W Model 19 for a Glock 19....... done deal!!!

DAO for carry ...

I've evolved from decades of 1911's in several flavors and carried them confidently cocked and locked.

Now my needs and habits have evolved from DA/SA (a 5906 for 25 years, though I rarely carried it) then several DA/SA 3g's 3913LS & 3914NL to a 4040PD still a favorite for carry. I've also adopted AISW carry and cocked and locked in that position is a bit unnerving.

But now I've come to like DAO for carry as one less thing to be wrong when you really need it. Decocker only would be OK to, but I don't have one.

I've got a 6946, 4046 and a 4546 in DAO, but my very favorite carry semi-auto is a 3914 DAO. Thin, light, and has a double strike capability that is unusual in DAO Smiths.

Big Dot sights are also my favorite for carry as well a disabled magazine safety.
