I took off red dot sight that had been mounted on my Ruger Mk. III 5.5-inch target pistol. I bought a new Weaver 2x28 pistol scope with rings to replace it. The pistol has Ruger's scope mount for Weaveer-type rings installed. When I attempted to mount the scope, its rear bell interferes with Ruger's OEM adjustable target rear sight. Rings lack less than 1/8 inch of height to clear the rear sight. I want to retain Ruger's OEM open sights.

How do I mount the scope with rings that came with Weaver's scope?

If this cannot be done, I'm thinking of buying, or trading for, rings that have that smidgen more height.

Since I have never mounted any pistol scope, I need recommendations.

If the consensus is a ring set, I am willing to trade - red dot included.

I would try sliding the scope far enough forward in the rings that the rear bell does not interfere with the rear sight. If the eye relief still allows you a proper view thru the scope when you hold the gun as normal, you are good to go.

If not, then new, slightly higher rings are called for. I guess you could possibly shim the factory weaver base, and use longer mounting screws to gain the needed height, but that is the difficult way to do it.

I have a number of scoped handguns, most used for hunting. Take a trip to Wally world, take a ring that is to low with you and look at the quad scope rings, look at the medium set first then the highs. They aren't expensive and hold scopes well for me. The you will need to find a new gun for your red dot.
