I am looking for a excellent pistolsmith in Southern California. I have a timing and or pushoff issue on a 19-3. Long story. I am in North San Diego County, but could go to LA. Any sugestions? Who is the best in 100 mile radius? Thank you, Big Rich

Most good gunsmiths left California years ago. Not saying it's impossible, but I wouldn't hold me breath. You might look to the east in Arizona. Also the guys at calguns.net might be of some help.

I would also ask around your local, trusted gun shops (preferably with revolvers in the display case) and see who they recommend.

When I lived in San Diego there were a couple of good smiths at Poway Gun Works. No idea if they still exist.

Edit to add: Just checked, listed as no longer in business. Par for the course in California.

Talk to Hugo at Duncan's Gunworks in Vista. He's a first rate smith and really knows what he's doing.

Best regards,

TJ's Custom Gunworks in Culver City. Not very personable but built almost everything I ever used for duty and competition guns, including a bunch of revolvers.

It's been 20 years or so since I've had these guys do any work for me. Way back when I still lived in California. However, they are formerly the west coast Smith & Wesson Factory Authorized Service Center and they have been in business for a long time. Everything they ever did for me was top notch.

I'm not in your area but what you are needing is well within the abilities of S&W armorers from the revolver era. It might be as simple as old dried up lube. Do check the strain screw in the front of the grip under the stocks for full tightness. Unless you have reason to think a monkey has been in there.
