This appaerently occurred some time back (1997). The ammo would most likely have been pre T-series SXTs which didn't perform as well as the newer, redesigned T series. Nonetheless, handguns of any caliber are poor stoppers and numerous agencies have documented failures to stop with them even with multiple hits.

Never seen a zombie movie? If body shots fail, aim for the head. The pithy way to remember it is "Two to the body, one to head, all fall dead".

Couple of things about this incident.....
1. Probably happened in a very few seconds.
1A. A head shot is much easier on a keyboard at home than in a dynamic encounter on the street.

2. Despite COM comments, that doesn't mean what you might assume. Depending upon the various angles involved, hitting the dude COM might not have produced penetration of the thorax in vital areas.

I can't recall where the bar was in the near west suburbs of Chicago, but?
They had a poster behind the bar that humorously explained the 12 or so stages of drunkenness.
The last one being "bullet proof".
