I have been following the S&W M&P pistols for some time now and own quite a few of them. I noticed that Bill Rogers in his recent training video on reactive shooting was using a S&W M&P. Also, the two Mag pul instructors used S&W M&P's in their training video on dynamic pistol shooting.
Some articles I have come across featuring the M&P are the article in "Guns and Ammo - Combat Tactics" ( summer 2010) " Super Dave - Training for Success, " by Steve Fisher and an article in "The Complete Book Of Auto Pistols" - " Reborn - Smith and Wesson M&P 45 " ( 2011) on the M&P 45 ( the author put 5,000 rounds through his M&P without cleaning the pistol and without any malfunctions and did some other torture testing.
Other than these articles, I have not seen anymore information on how well these pistols are holding up. I just finished putting 1,000 rounds through my Glock 17 without cleaning and without any malfunctions. I intend to try the same with my S&W M&P Spec Ops.
I had a S&W M&P 40 caliber give me a dead trigger. It is now fixed. To be fair I have seen a Glock 40 cal blown and useless in a ccw class; and I had my the tip of the recoil spring break off mine, after field stripping, and render the pistol useless.
Nothing is infallible.
However, my three S&W 9mm have not missed a beat so far. They are approaching 1,000 rounds each, as I have loaned them to other people to take tactical classes with.
Have any of you seen any articles on the S&W M&P's? How well are your pistols shooting and holding up?
Any information would be appreciated.

They are matching the Glocks in durability and performance in IDPA and USPSA, where they are often shot more in a year than the average shooter shoots in a lifetime. In raw numbers, they almost mached the total Glocks in the last IDPA Nationals.
Competitors, particularly at the top levels, have no loyalty except to what works.
You can get more information on the IDPA forum.

Thanks for the information. I appreciate it.

ive shot about 400 rounds through mine. i havent cleaned it yet, i think ive had 2 eject failures. still, pretty solid. it was probably the ammo that caused it im thinking

i have 3 m&p 40c all shoot absolutely flawless. i have a friend who has diabetes and really can't see the sights so i put a crimson trace on one for him. when we go the range usually about 300 rds for him and sometimes i am lazy and don't clean his gun until after the second trip. never a problem, and that one does have close to 5000 rds through it if not more. and now for the dirty word part my carry is a glock 27, just a little more compact and lighter for me

I have only put around 200 rounds through my M&P 45 but the important part is it has been three different kinds of hollow point and FMJ. Not one malfunction. I do clean the gun and did break it down and clean & lube it when I first brought it home. The thing just feeds, ejects, repeat. I really love this thing and I could not be happier with it.
Best, Frank.

When I'm running training, I've never counted but have gone at least 500 rounds thru my 45FS without cleaning. I do stop and inspect and lube it once in a while. Even Glock recommeds lubing their pistols, even when brand new, out of the box, and I think its just good practice to take the best care possible to the thing that might save your life. I tried shooting an unlubed, brand new Glock 19 without any additional lube other than what fellow shooters had told me was on the gun from the factory. It went a whole 101 rounds of Norinco ball before it started failing to feed. The slide was dry. On the other hand, I've run Glock 40s and 45 at least up close to 1000 rounds without cleaning. Its just a matter of keeping it lubed to manufacturer specifications. Good synthetics help.

I've only had one range malfunction with a Glock that put it out of action. The slide lock spring broke in the middle of a string and the slide lock lever came out. The slide started to follow. In the real world, carry a back up gun. beyond that, I've never had a plastic recoil spring guide break, but I've replaced them cause the springs became weak. I've also broke trigger pins and trigger return springs. The trigger just gets real gritty when the trigger pin breaks and I'm sure will cause a stoppage. Again, in the real world, carry a back up.

My M&P has just over 4K rounds thru it. I've sent it back once for warranty repairs when one of the rolled pins started to work its way out. I'd rather let S&W fix it right the first time than keep whacking it back in. Still, it did not stop the pistol from functioning.

For the most part, I think the M&P has gotten over its teething problems. At least one federal agency that allegedly abuses test guns has authorized it as a privately owned carry option. With all of the other features the M&P offers, its no wonder that it is starting to offer serious competetion. I've always preferred to buy American, but it can legitimately said that American companies just flat did not produce any semi auto pistol for a long time that could rival the simplicity, reliability, or affordability of a Glock. Law enforcement officer prices on an M&P are equal to Glocks LE prices at present. S&W is catching up, and if the rumors I've heard are true, Glock's 4th Generation pistols are not quite as reliable as the previous offerings. That said, I'm good with an M&P in my holster. The only thing S&W needs to add to the lineup is a pistol the size of a G19.

I bought mine in June.....and I have over 1800 rounds down the pipe so far.....and counting. Not one misfire or jam.

I have an M&P Pro 9mm that I had never fired until a training class this past weekend. It was a bit of a risk taking a new gun to a class but I had 2 other pistols with me so I wasn't concerned.

I put around 1300 rounds through it in 2 days with no gun-related issues (I did have an ammunition-related problem). After the first day I didn't clean it, I just wiped off some of the carbon, put on new lube and reassembled it.

A couple of thousand rounds or more with no cleaning isn't a big deal, any modern service pistol should be able to accomplish that and more.

I have owned at least 8 M&P pistols in all calibers. The 357 Sig was the most fun to shoot and quite interesting. Can't tell you how many rounds I've fired but I can honestly say that I have never had any problems. No missfeeds, double feeds, failure to eject. Nothing. I am completely sold on the M&P design.

I know Glocks are a hell of a gun. But I still don't like them. Thank God for the M&P.

Durability

Mine is > 4 yrs. old and all I do is shoot 'em and clean 'em.
Everything from tame target loads to +P loads.
Just a suggestion to S&W, how about one in 50GI please!!!!!!!!!!
I'm sure they'd sell a boatload of them..............

I bought my M&P9 FS in January. I've got close to 2,000 rounds through it now, nearly all CCI Blazer Brass 115gr FMJ. It has not had a single malfunction of any kind. I put about 500 rounds through it before I cleaned it the first time, and I've only cleaned it three times since buying it. It never seems to be too dirty, even after 500 rounds through it. Right now it sits fully cleaned in my V-Line lockbox next to my bed.

After a typical range session, the barrel and forward part of the slide is far too hot to touch. In fact, during the last session, I actually had to stop shooting it as it was too hot to comfortably hold with a thumbs-up grip.

I've lost two of the three sight dots, but otherwise, it's been magnificent. The trigger has smoothed out with use and a fair bit of dry firing. I'd rate the trigger as "usable" but I've shot a lot better even though I've not shot an extensive collection of guns.

I shoot it well and I enjoy it.
