Anyone have experience with plastic .38 Speer Practice bullets?
How many times can they be reloaded?
I'd like to use them for my own 7 yard indoor range.

I have 2 boxes but I have never shot even one round yet. I hear they are fairly durable and can be use 6X or more. Those red cases look very strong and the black bullets fit tightly. I'm guessing the primer pockets will be the failure point.

I just bought some for the 38 spl a month ago and loaded 18 rounds and did notice a little problem getting the primers in and slight damage to one base............ Its plastic !!

Courious if they will penetrat a cardboard box at ten feet.....
I intend to have a blanket backstop to catch the bullets and have them drop to a collection box. Got them for the wife and daughter-inlaw to practice with. Have not tried one yet, since I don't want to scare the stuffings out of the dogs.
Was surprised by the 300 primers though..........oh well.

Was thinking a large CB box with the flaps folded in at a 45 degree would catch the bullets and a paper target could be taped to the opening................ maybe a paper plate, still in the early planning stages.

good luck.

ps i almost passed on this message .... might add: Plastic practice load

I would suggest a large cardboard box with a square of old carpet hung behind the target. That's how I built my basement backstop, and no round ever penetrated the carpet from 25'. I got anywhere from 6 - 10 loadings from the Speer Target-.38s.

If you have a good bullet trap

If you have a good trap the bullets will last for several firings at least and the cases will last over and over again. The bullets accumulate rifling cuts and I suppose they lose their accuracy when it doesn't fit the barrel anymore. They have some pretty good punch, I accidentally dented some wallboard in pretty deep with them.

I used to use these quite a bit. As I recall they are accurate at short range, but one needs to devise an alternate (high) aiming point. They will penetrate beverage cans. Don't forget your ear and eye protection.

I remember a story of a guy that thought his bullet stop was plenty good enough for these plastic bullets. after quite a few shots in the same place the stop gave in and the overstuffed chair behind it became the stop. It was not me - I'm just passing on possibly useful info.

Speer plastic bullet misfire

Has anyone had a problem with misfires using Winchester large pistol primers with the .38 Speer plastic cases? I know they are specifically designed for CCI #300 large pistol primers, but had to settle for what is available. I have a S&W 60 revolver with less than 200 rounds fired thru it. No problem firing factory ammo, but the Speers all fail to fire even though the caps are dimpling. Do the CCI primers have a higher profile? Any feedback would be appreciated.

I've used the 44 magnum plastic bullets before. After about 40 rounds one got stuck in the barrel. They seem to be dirty so run a brush through once every few rounds.

I'd be concerned with breathing the air in any range that did not have great air exchange. Primers can put some funky stuff in the air.....
