plated bullets

Hello all in the past I have loaded 148 grain lead bevel base wadcutters with 3 grains of bullseye for my model 27. I have seen the same type of bullet but with copper plating and was wondering if I could use the same powder charge. My old Speer manual does not list this bullet.

The plated bullet companies generally say to use the lead data. However, I suspect that the best "data" would be closer to lead than jacketed but still somewhat more powder for equal FPS. So if you are looking to push the 148 gr WC to 750 fps then 3.1 or 3.2 grains might be required?

I load 3.0gr of Bullseye using either X-Treme or Ranier 148gr plated wadcutters. A very nice load for indoor range use and have just a bit more "pop" to them than Federal Gold Match wadcutters.

From the horse's mouth, Rainier recommends using lead data and Berry suggests low to mid-range jacketed data. Testing with a Ransom Rest and two model 14's, I found 3.7 gr Bullseye gave the tightest groups. That's what I use. I get best accuracy with Rainier's DEWC.

I tried to use the Berry's 148 gr HBWC. In order to obtain relkiable functioning from my S&W Model 52 i had to bump up the W-231 load from my normal 3.2 gr. to 4.0 gr. which is the maximum on the Hodgdon site for the lead version. I gave up and hasve returned to using the tried and tru Remington 148 gr. LHBWC's.
