One of my most pleasant childhood memories were of living with my Aunt Francis from age 13 to age 17. This was like 1973 to 1977. She was older than my Mother, and a whole lot easier to get along with. One of the things that sticks in my memory is accompanying her to monthly "German American Social Club" outings.

She lived in Roanoke, Virginia and was an active member of the local German American Social Club, even though she was not German. I think she was a member because she was such a good cook, the monthly meetings involved a lot of eating and drinking.

What made these monthly outings memorable to me was the fact they had .22 rifle competitions at each meeting. The meetings were held on some members property, semi-rural, with six bullet traps suspended on poles at 50 feet. Competition was held shooting off hand, standing, any .22 rifle could be used. I used my Uncle's Winchester Model 62 pump, and was not at all competitive against the target rifles these Germans wielded. They did give me some basic marksmanship advice, "You must grasp zee rifle like so"... "Squeeze zee trigger, no jerk".....

These competitions took about an hour each meeting, and was preceeded and followed by much beer drinking.

Anyway, I spent a very pleasant morning this AM duplicating the bullet trap arrangement. I had bought a used .22 bullet trap on a local Facebook trading sight, made a stand for it from scrap lumber and a landscaping timber. Placed it exactly 50 feet from the back door of my cabin:

My best effort, prone with CCI "Quiet" ammo, no sling:

The neighbors are a ways off, probably 1/2 mile or so, but I think shooting Stand Velocity .22 ammo or quieter is best unless I have some serious target work to do. Archery Deer season is in now, so quieter is better so I don't disturb a hunt...

You remind me......

I've been so busy getting my house back in order I have been able to do any shooting. So, if it dries out around here a little and with highs in 80s it's my favorite time of the year.
