I am looking at Red Dot sights and don't know what 1/3rd cowitness means? While it is easy to determin what full or absolute cowitness means, this 1/3rd thing has me confused.

Is it that the Red Dot lens lines up with the iron sights 1/3rd of the field of view? Does it really matter?

Trash...

Trash, I myself have been confused by the purpose for 1/3 cowitness, to me it gives you two aiming points and the only thing I was ever able to figure out was that if your iron sights line up at the lower 1/3rd of the red dots FOV then maybe they are used for close up shooting and the red dot itself is for longer range

Trash- yeah I am getting ready to absolute co-witness my homebuilt AR, I am not concerned with it blocking my view of another attacker..LOL

Yes.that's what I'm thinking too. I don't like the 1/3rd view.
I still haven't decided on a Red Dot yet.
I wish Nikon made a Red Dot [long time nature photographer who has used Nikon lenses for years].

Aimpoint & EOtech are a bit too expensive for my needs.
[my AR is for home protection & survival].

Who knows, I may change my mind & go with a 4X scope?
As long as I can cowitness it with my iron sights.
I haven't even looked for sights yet.

If its for home protection and survival then an Aimpoint or EoTech is no where too expensive.

I am going to co-witness with an Ultradot Pan-AV...I got it with my Sport originally. It has turned out to be really solid holographic sight.

I'm going to try the Vortex Strikefire and set it up for absolute co-witness. If I spend anymore and my wife finds out...

Shinny....I promise you...everyone here understands that statement. I told my wife not to worry about getting me anything for Christmas that I was going to get myself another gun. I dont think she believes I was serious so the SWHTF when it gets here but I already told her so she cant get too mad. I hope!!!

That's how I just got my sport. Plus the stocking stuffers were ammo.

I could get my wife "to you for me" presents :D

I've got the strikefire myself and love it! You definitely won't be disappointed with it.

And I was explained the best reason for 1/3 is so you can have your irons set to 100-200 yds and the red dot at 50. Kinda makes sense to me, because I've got the post front and a MBUS rear so I keep the rear down when using my vortex, but can't see any real benefit of cowitnessing. When I run the vortex on the 15-22 I run it by itself and enjoy it personally because I feel it's less obstructed. To each their own tho

That uhhhh that does make any sense at all. You can't have iron sights set (zero'd) to just a specific range segment like 100-200 yards, its sort of impossible because the bullet does not suddenly originate at 100 yards and end at 200 yards. Setting (zeroing) iron sights starts at the sight line on the weapon and extends through the zero point for the maximum range of the bullet (being above or below the zero line at various points in its flight path), for the bullet it begins at the muzzle exit and its path for zero coincides with the sights zero.

I'm not sure what exactly you're talking about, but maybe one of us is misunderstanding something. I was talking about having the irons set for somewhere between 100 and 200 yds just as a reference point to say that the red dot and irons can be set at two different distances

Mine is absolute co-witness right now I'm thinking about 1/3 on my next optic.... if I go that route.
