Please explain

We have an indian casino down here in the middle of a cane field-literally. Not really a "destination" but just a place to come and gamble. Over the past 20 years they have pretty much sucked out most of the money from the locals and have been slowly replacing their slot machines to the point whee about 70% are penny slots. Never mind that people are betting 400 pennies a roll-but apparently they can squeeze out the last little bit one penny at a time. That is why we still have the penny.
Some idiot figured out that the casino could make more money per square foot with penny slots than they were making with the poker room so now I have no place to play cards:mad: Well, at least without having to bring a gun and worry about someone jacking the game :D
But I digest...the original thread was about the penny. My pet peeve is the dollar bill. They ought to DO AWAY with the paper dollar and MAKE people use dollar coins-and while we're at it, do like Canada and have two dollar coins. Canada's smallest denonination of paper currency is $5 and it seems to be working.

Who's gonna want my 10 gallon crock full of pennies? I've been throwing them in there for 30 years. I can't even move it anymore!
Pay your property tax with them.

I remember a man taking a wheelbarrow full of pennies to the courthouse, making the staff count them and give him a receipt. He wasn't real popular around there after that.

As I remember, he even took his wheelbarrow back home with him.

Do away with cash??

Just do away with all cash. Implant a chip that automatically debits from your account, to which your pay is automatically deposited.

Each chip should contain a series of digits for identification. Three groups of six digits should about do it......

You mean each time a drug dealer makes a sale it will be recorded on some banks records? How about all the people on public assistance that "don't have a job" but now the govmint will determine they do have a job? And you haven't even considered the poor fellow that makes a living robbing convenience stores, there won't be any cash in the cash register for him to steal. Boy, you're fixing to throw our whole economic system into chaos.

OK. But how does one keep a coin in a G-string, especially when inverted on the pole?

You don't see taxes added to purchases in Europe because they use something called a value added tax or VAT. Basically, everytime something changes hands, the government gets a cut.

Of course, the end user is the person who ends up paying all the taxes.

What would I put in my Penny Loafers?? Nickel or Dime Loafers just doesn't sound right.
I remember that in Hong Kong the 1 cent piece was a paper bill and was only printed on one side (Talk about Monopoly money...)

Re: Pennies, etc. Can't see a problem with them. No interested in the round up/down business. Given the way the world works... the price would be rounded up... always. If a penny is not such a big deal, why to multinational corporations whine so much over mere pennies in price difference? I figure what's good for those geese is good for us ganders.

A cashless economy might suit some. It'd definitely suit taxing authorities. It would possibly hinder the illegal economy, but given that it operates mostly underground, they'd just find a way around any impediment a cashless system might impose. The boys who played with bank money, etc., in Scotland, Bernie Madoff, etc., they all figured rules were for other people to follow... they got around the rules... till caught. Wonder how many untold millions of dollars they took from how many millions of people?

Taxes? Can't think of anyone who like 'em. If everyone were required to remit to the fed. and st. govt. their income and SSI taxes, etc. on a monthly basis, a lot more people would very suddenly get converted to wanting taxes reduced! Payroll deduction is the one and only reason so many people do not object to the taxes they pay. As to fair or not fair, not going there. Regardless of how any system of taxation is set up, there will always be those who benefit from any system of taxation, there will always be those who game that system for their own interest, there will always be those who are hurt by it. JMHO. Sincerely. brucev.

If an Eskimo had this done, would that mean his account is frozen????? Just wondering.

The guv'mint tried the $1 coin some years ago. They brilliant designers decided to make it the same size as the quarter. People couldn't run away from them fast enough.

It just goes to show who really has the power in the Gov't. The reason for the dollar coins being the same size as the quarters was pushed through by the manufacturers of coin vending machines. If the new dollar coin was larger in diameter than a quarter, all of the coin operated vending machines in the US would have to be recalled and overhauled to accept the new large coin. If the dollar coin was the same size as the quarter, the existing vending machines could be used without major changes to the mechanism.

I like to use $2 bills to pay bills. Most of the people think they are counterfeit bills!

Just some more things to ponder about the penny.

Where would we be without the penny arcade?

What about three penny opera?

Then there are the pennies from heaven.

A penny earned, is a penny saved.

Charleston Heston Will Penny...nah forget that one.

A penny wise a pound foolish!

A penny used to stick in the old type fuse holder..(Lots of youse' might be too young to know about that one)

Got have a penny to put on the railroad tracks, for the train to run over.

Ya got to have pennies to leave or a penny take, and some of the check out counters.

Find a penny, put it in your pocket to bring good luck all day.

Nap time...That's enough for now.

Maybe we should just devalue the dollar.
Print out a whole new set of "new dollar" bills and coins: one new worth ten old.
Boy... would that shake up the world or what?

Really though. personally I think we should can the paper dollar and use dollar coins. It's a proven cost savings. The problem is that our government is too incompetent to do it the right way. We only need to look to our northern neighbor to see how it's done... just quit printing dollar bills. And make the new coin more easily discernible from the quarter!
John

The current size of the 1 cent coin in the US was a Half Cent coin, the one cent coin was BIG, like the old English Pennys. The Continental Congress printed paper currency in 25, 50, and 75 cent denominations as well as 1,2, and 3 dollar bills. There were 2 and 3 cent pieces and Half Dimes too. The needs of commerce used to control what coins were minted. Ivan

I hope that was just a joke  !

I want to know why when you buy gas or cigarettes, you pay what the advertised price is, the tax is already in the price. Why isn't everything else like that? It is in other countries, why not here? If we do away with the penny, the Fed should make every bank buy them for face value. The fact that some banks will charge you 10% to take your money, just because it's coins, is piracy.

Simple...they only put the tax in with the price of something when they {the politicians that passed the tax, but need to try to get re-elected} don't want the rest of us to know just how bad they are hammering {there are better terms, but not here} us. Half the cost of a gallon of gasoline in Maryland is tax. All that said, you called it right...piracy!!!!

My daughters husband has a twin brother that played Zach on the Big Bang Theory. He was Penny's boyfirend for a while.

The only man that I ever considered hugging since he had been on a show with Kaley Cuoco.

Have you noticed that dollar stores are no where near as cool as the old five and dime stores?

Being penny'd to death doesn't have the same ring though as being Nickle and Dime'd to death.
