Welcome to the Forum,
You have already identified it as a Model 10-5. These are very common although I see more 4" barrels than ones like your 6"-not 5" as you posted . The barrel is measured from the front of the cylinder to the muzzle of the barrel. Your's has a 6" barrel. The Model 10 is the venerable patrolman's gun that was in countless thousands of copper's holsters including mine. Do you have the stocks (grips) for it?
The serial# dates to about 1968ish according to the Standard Catalog.

Thank you. I got this gun from my dad when he died. I guess I meant what year. I'm not familiar with these revolvers. Is this the correct method to measure?

It came to me with replacement grips. Thank you again for the info and thank you for your service!

In that picture, that is the correct way to measure. I'm no expert, but that looks like a 5" barrel to me.

I had a 5" "pre model 10" (military & police) for years. I really like that barrel length. I'd like to find another one.

Gun looks nice, find a set of proper vintage grips and you'll be good to go.

Welcome to the forum, please stick around.

Yup, My boo-boo. You are indeed measuring correctly. The barrel looks longer in your first pic. Sorry for any confusion. My condolences for the passing of your father.

Welcome, and condolences also. The factory stocks would have been the smaller or Magna style, checkered walnut, with rounded bottoms and without the uncheckered diamond around the stock screw.

If you use the Search function above, and type model 10-5 in the Google Custom Search text box, prepare to be amazed at the amount of information on it contained on the Forum. The style of stocks will show up in a photo or two. Hope this is helpful.

According to SCSW3 Looks like 1968 should be close.

Murphy dog: you usually take care of these chip shots.

My old eyes are getting worse:o

No worries...I always assume I'm doing it wrong; lol. Thank you for your help!

It's not just close, I daresay you are right on. The D-prefix started in 1968 and went to D90,000 that year. I have D47xxx which shipped in June, so D19xxx was certainly made before then that year; of course irregularities in shipping order are always possible, but I don't believe they randomly numbered guns in production.
