Firstly, I am rather unknowledgeable but tried to follow the identification instructions. So here is some info.
32 Winchester OTG
serial on bottom of butt: 37245
Number on yoke: 47655 (not entirely sure of last digit)
5 inch barrel
hand ejector
sight is fixed
5 screws

Any information would be helpful
Thanks all

I would like to add that there is a strain screw present.

Thanks again

Hi and welcome to the S&W Forum.

First, the barrel mark is 32 Winchester CTG. CTG is an abbreviation for the word cartridge and it designates the chambering of the revolver. It is what is otherwise known as the .32-20 Winchester cartridge.

Serial number 37245 was probably shipped from the factory in 1908, based on nearby serial numbers.

A five inch barrel and fixed sights is a common configuration.

The five digit number in the yoke area was a parts tracking number used during assembly and means little now.

Jack, thanks much for the information you have provided. It belonged to my wifes grandfather or great grandfather. I wanted to pass it on to our grandson, so needed a little information.
The only thing I noted that is different if that the CTG seems to be clearly OTG. Maybe that is the way S&W did it back then.
Once again, Thanks
Mike

Aside from these specifics, it may be of interest to note they were made from 1899 until 1940 with total production of 144,684-----most as fixed sight guns, the balance as "targets" (adjustable rear sight models).

There were eight minor modifications made along the way to improve the performance, virtually none of which altered the appearance of the gun, yours was made with two such changes.

Welcome to the Forum! You've inherited a fine family heirloom. My fellow Forum members have given you some great historical information about your revolver, but did not provide a model name. I believe you have a .32-20 Hand Ejector Model of 1905 (2nd Change). S&W manufactured 11,699 of these revolvers from 1906-1909, with serial numbers between 33501-45200. Original stocks (grips) should be checkered walnut with a diamond center. The revolvers were available in either blued or nickel finish. We always like to see pictures, so if you would post a couple it would be greatly appreciated. Enjoy!

Be prepared for some sticker shock on .32-20 ammunition. It's a low-volume boutique round these days. Most .32-20 fans seem to reload and even cast their own bullets. The HSM cowboy load is usually the cheapest and still around $1/round.
