Please help me pick a safe.

Hello everyone,

I need help picking a gun safe. It must do the following things:

House two large N Frame Revolvers (a six inch barrel 629 and a five inch barrel 627)

Prevent potential damage from heat and humidity.

That's about it. It can get hot and humid where I live, and I hadn't previously considered the risk of damage from these factors. I am planning on getting two Bore Stores as well.

What are you recommendations for a safe to hold these two guns and keep them safe from corrosion?

Also, would you recommend putting anything else in the safe to absorb additional moisture?

I'm currently looking for a safe myself and have slightly different needs. During my search I came across this site that might be of some interest/help to you.

For our first anniversary, my new bride and I split the cost of a 50 gun Cannon safe from Gander Mtn. About $2200 delivered. It came with an attachment to the back of the door that holds about a dozen handguns and has larger zippered pockets for documents and the like...

Between her guns and mine, it's full plus some...we also keep jewelry, coins, and and other small valuables in it....passports, wills, insurance papers, etc.

My Kachinas, Painted Ponies, and a pair of wood duck decoys grace the top....

Buying a safe....

I bought a Liberty safe after talking to locksmiths. They have a good website and offer a good dehumidifiers too.
You may have a local dealer and he may give a better price than the factory.
Do not buy too small a safe.

In addition to what others said i advise you to buy gun socks. They pad the guns so you avoid scratches and nicks. I think I got mine on eBay.

For a small space you can sometimes buy a cake of camphor at a drugstore. Tear a hole in a corner and put them in with the guns. The camphor will evaporate and leave a film on the surface of the guns.

Also, paste wax on guns helps avoid rusty fingerprints and shines them up nicely.

If we're talking full blown safes, my go to recommendation is Sturdy Safe. 100% made in Fresno by a family business, they have heavier gauge steel and take a simple, effective approach to design that I like. A lot of the imports are 10 and 12 ga bodies. Theirs is 7 gauge, 3" thick door, welded the right way, these things are as tough as you'll get without buying 1/4" and making one.

Just checked and their smallest is 60x24x16 if you get talked into a full blown safe versus a smaller handgun only safe. Like everyone else if you are a "gun guy" I'd take whatever you think you need and double it. Between gun expansion and using it to store other things I've never met a person yet who said they bought too big a safe.

Handgun only my question is how much access do you need? If this is storing a home defense weapon I'd look at Gunvault b/c of the quick access time, and bolting it down. If it's longer term storage you have more options but they still need to be bolted or built in somewhere.

The problem with the smaller ones is fitting a Goldenrod into them. I don't know if they make one small enough to fit and/or operate in something that's only 12x12x12 type sizes.

Given your concern about humidity I'd get a big can of color changing desiccant as a warning system. That way you'll know if it's really keeping it dry or not and can adjust accordingly.
