The grip the M63 comes with is a bit on the slim (and tacky...as in "sticky") side for me. I have a set of Uncle Mikes that look similar to the original stocks but feel better in my hand. They give the gun more pointability / neutral cant.
Trouble is, I like the look of a darker wood on a stainless gun. I also have a Lobo Threepersons holster in cordovan on the way for it and can't fathom a gun in a nice leather holster wearing "rubber".
Got the gun a few months ago and had a set of Badger stocks. Just a bit on the small side, no checkering, and an esp. slick finish.
Bought a set of Altemonts from a friend. The ones that have the covered backstrap. Just don't quite look right on the gun somehow and at least for me to get a sight picture I have to cant my wrist down more than I'd like. (You're thinking "He's a picky S.O.B.!" And...you may be right!)
Two grips arrived today in the mail. (I was kinda naughty over the weekend) A Hogue in cocobolo, checkered with just the top finger groove and another Altemont, this one the mininal coverage model that has an open backstrap and doesn't extend below the grip frame.
The Altemont is...well, pretty darned small. It didn't look that small in the website photo and the finish on it is pretty slippery.
To continue my complaining: I hadn't bought a Hogue handgun grip in probably 20 years and never a J-frame grip. To begin with, the bubble pack didn't contain the "attachment hardware", the horseshoe deal and screw that hold the grip on the gun. (Bad start) I fitted the grip on the gun to see how it would look and discovered that one edge of the wood where it meets the backstrap had a gap in it. Not horrible....but for a delivered price of $104 I expected more. I also thought the palm swells on each side of the grip were thicker than necessary and detracted from the feel of the grip.
On the flip side, the color, figure of the wood and checkering were first rate. So was Brian at Hogue customer service whe bent over backwards to make it right. Offered to return or replace the grip at my choice and asked me to make a simple drawing to sent along with the return package indicating exactally where the gap was so he could identify the problem. He said "This is very unusual, we only get maybe one complaint a year of this nature."
So... to the point. I'm looking for a grip in a darker reddish wood (To go with the holster), probably checkered, extending slightly below the grip frame, that's somewhat handfilling but not overly large and an open backstrap prefered. Am I missing something...any suggestions?

Here is my new 3" 63 sporting the S&W Accessories # 411740000 '60 Pro' grip - a bargain at $42.97 + s/h + s/t:

'at looks pretty much what I'm lookin' for! Sadly, I can't find it on the S&W sight under any of the grip selections or by punching in the product code.
My luck is...they've been discontinued.
Thanks though! John

It's not on the site... you need the secret handshake... just call them, 1-800-331-0852, and order it!! Seriously, the 60 Pro is a current - actually, fairly recent - production - and that is it's grip. I got mine a month ago.

Nill has a few offerings for new style J frames.

I have a 63, no-dash that I installed Pacs on when I fisrt purchased the it. They're OK but seem a bit bulky to me.

I'm thinking of replacing them and have similar issues as you do. I'll be watching for your "fix."

Go to Top Gun Supply's website and check out the Ahrends grips they sell for $60 for the S&W J frame.

I put a set of walnut combat grips on my 60-18 5 inch and they are 1000% better than the Uncle Mike's that came with the gun.

Also Gun Grip Supply sells laminated rosewood, walnut and other grips with the S&W medallion. Plain or laser checkered. I've purchased sets for a couple of K frames and my Taurus. Beautiful wood and superb fit and finish.

Both retailers offer fast, affordable shipping too.

Posting for "Engine 18's" interest and a shout out "thanks" to "Steamloco 76".
I ended up ordering the Ahrends combat grips in Cocobolo from Top Gun Supply. A bit of a mistake, since after I ordered I saw that Brownells carrys them for seventeen bucks less. Oh well. Got them in today.
Great color! A nice slightly reddish medium to darker chocolate brown. Just the color I was hoping for.
Proportionally they're pretty darned good, except for mayby a slight "banana look" to them towards the lower end.
The feel is great - just fills the hand and no more. (I've got about medium sized hands) Great pointability and actually quite thin.
Gripes? I guess the first would be that the poly finish and lack of checkering does make them feel a bit on the slick side, although the "fits like a gove" feel to the grip as a whole almost makes up for it.
There are some small gaps both at the bottom rear and in the middle towards the top on the front where the halves meet, but nothing horrendous. Overall - I like'em!
Sadly, the addiction I have is forcing me to cal S&W tomorrow to order the 60 Pro grip as well. Thanks fellow enabelers!

Hey guys, I'd like to jump in here...

I like both the "Pro 60" grip as well as the J-frame smoot target grips as shown in this thread:
http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-re...42-now-ive-found-4-inch-model-34-kit-gun.html

Neither the Pro 60 nor the J-frame smooth target grips are shown on the S&W store on their site.
I know that the Pro 60's should be available with a phone call, but what about the J-frame smooth targets... are they current production by Smith or are they discontinued?

I've got a Model 63 that's begging for a set of either of those grips, but it's a square frame. So will either the Pro 60 grips or those smooth target grips fit a square frame 63? I see references that they both should, but just want to verify.

Decker;

The smooth Targets fit both round and square butt J frames. I have not seen the other style; they will fit the round butt, as all current J frames are RB.
