The grip the M63 comes with is a bit on the slim (and tacky...as in "sticky") side for me. I have a set of Uncle Mikes that look similar to the original stocks but feel better in my hand. They give the gun more pointability / neutral cant.
Trouble is, I like the look of a darker wood on a stainless gun. I also have a Lobo Threepersons holster in cordovan on the way for it and can't fathom a gun in a nice leather holster wearing "rubber".
Got the gun a few months ago and had a set of Badger stocks. Just a bit on the small side, no checkering, and an esp. slick finish.
Bought a set of Altemonts from a friend. The ones that have the covered backstrap. Just don't quite look right on the gun somehow and at least for me to get a sight picture I have to cant my wrist down more than I'd like. (You're thinking "He's a picky S.O.B.!" And...you may be right!)
Two grips arrived today in the mail. (I was kinda naughty over the weekend) A Hogue in cocobolo, checkered with just the top finger groove and another Altemont, this one the mininal coverage model that has an open backstrap and doesn't extend below the grip frame.
The Altemont is...well, pretty darned small. It didn't look that small in the website photo and the finish on it is pretty slippery.
To continue my complaining: I hadn't bought a Hogue handgun grip in probably 20 years and never a J-frame grip. To begin with, the bubble pack didn't contain the "attachment hardware", the horseshoe deal and screw that hold the grip on the gun. (Bad start) I fitted the grip on the gun to see how it would look and discovered that one edge of the wood where it meets the backstrap had a gap in it. Not horrible....but for a delivered price of $104 I expected more. I also thought the palm swells on each side of the grip were thicker than necessary and detracted from the feel of the grip.
On the flip side, the color, figure of the wood and checkering were first rate. So was Brian at Hogue customer service whe bent over backwards to make it right. Offered to return or replace the grip at my choice and asked me to make a simple drawing to sent along with the return package indicating exactally where the gap was so he could identify the problem. He said "This is very unusual, we only get maybe one complaint a year of this nature."
So... to the point. I'm looking for a grip in a darker reddish wood (To go with the holster), probably checkered, extending slightly below the grip frame, that's somewhat handfilling but not overly large and an open backstrap prefered. Am I missing something...any suggestions?
