Please recommend grips for my square butt Model 10

Ahrends makes their grips for square butts too. I normally stock both and can tell you their Retro Targets are hard to beat for new grips. The Tactical are also very nice if you like finger groove grips. HIGHLY recommend both!

My M10-6 square butt came with factory Presentation Pachmayrs that are Smith and Wesson marked. I really love the look and feel of wood, but when it's time to get down to business, its a set of Pach's for me...

Like Mike here I have Ahrends tactical walnut grips on all my wheel guns my favorite being the 28-2 N frame I carry everywhere I go. I might ad that the tactical can be had with or without finger grooves. ( Sorry Mike) I personally like them without the grooves. Great thing about these particular grips is you can shoot them from either hand. They are configured the same on both sides. As for how they handle I shoot nothing but 357s' with them and I'm kissing the 75yr mark in a couple more months and not having any problems what so ever.

I recently got a pair of Retro Targets from Kim for my 625 and they are excellent, but they seem a bit thin to me. (Same with the Altamonts.) My model 14 has the big S&W targets on them and even though I don't have big hands, they just feel "right", so I'm thinking I might want the same on the N frame. Either that or a pair of Roper-style with the palm swell.

I like the way the back of a set of magnas fits my palm, and a set of Tyler T-grips fills the front nicely. Just like I have on my M18 by some strange coincidence.

For looks and nostalgia, get S&W Magnas. For shooting, try Hogue. For carry, try Hogue Bantam if they make them for the K frame square butt. If not, try something like an Eagle Secret Service grip or similar.
Hate to pick on ya Shawn but here goes. So you're carrying it with your Eagles and you have to shoot somebody-do you change out the grips to the Hogues first or just wing it with the Eagle Secret Service Grip or similar? Mr-I'd want to figure out whoch worked best for shooting and then carry it with those. For me, with my J and K frames that means magna's with a tyler with a wrap of vet tape around them for a solid nonslip grip that is concealable AND shootable .

All four of those Ahrends SB grips are beautiful but 1) just appear large in relation to the gun and 2) probably cost 1/3 or more of what I paid for the gun! S+W Targets seem big to me, too. A 4" Model 10 may be a "service gun" but the tapered barrel kind of makes it come off, well, smaller to me. (Or "svelte and nimble" as I said in my first post.) I like the feel of the Targets but they just seem too big for the gun. (They are more appropriate to a 4" or 6" 19 or 586 in my opinion)

I've ordered a pair of Kip's adapters and we'll see. The Magna's look just right to me and the back of them feels good, too. I definitely think for most .38 shooting a big grip that covers the backstrap is overkill as far as necessary "padding". If the Magna's with the adapter don't work I think I'll start toying around with making my own pair. They'll line up on the backstrap just like the magna's and fill-in on the front strap like a cross between my Ahrend's RB and the Pachy 'Pro's'.

Got my grip adapter. (BK, not Tyler) It definitely makes a difference. Much better with it. I think I'd still like to have a RB with a 4" tapered barrel. I've seen some pics of pre-model 10's in this configuration. Were there any later models produced this way?

I have tried just about everything. These two, which are very hard to find these days, are very good. Uncle Mike's Boot Grips and Pachmayr Gripper Professional (open backstrap)

I shoot a lot of PPC matches and the Pachmayr Gripper Professionals feel and shoot best on my square butt Model 67. Magnas with a T-Grip shift too much in my hand and my scores are significantly lower than with the Pachmayr.

Really, though, this is like asking which shoe fits best. My hands are small to medium with short fingers. The Grippers with the open back strap fit me best, but others with larger or smaller hands may have completely different experiences. :D

-Drew

Ahrends grips are made to fit either round or square butt frames.

I have Ahrends Retro Target grips on a square frame K-22. They are slimmer than the original S&W target grips (didn't come with mine), especially at the bottom. They don't slip as much under recoil.

On the whole, I prefer Ahrends Tactical grips over the Retro style. They are symmetrical left and right, and are flattened on the front for quicker alignment with one hand or two.

Ahrends grips have a palm swell, but it is broader and higher on the grip than Hogue. I find the shape lets me hold higher on the frame and distributes the recoil better (as if a heavy .357 has recoil). The backstrap is open, which gives people with average to small hands better reach for double action.

If you have really large hands, you should look at Herrett grips, which cover the backstrap, but are otherwise very similar to Ahrends grips.

I like the Ahrends as well. I have them on a 66 snubbie and a Mod 10 4" taper with a round butt.

So they did make that combination. Can I ask what dash #? Are they rare? I can't say I've seen one but it's really only recently occurred to me to hunt for one.

Hey Jim, it's a dash 11. I snagged it from a guy for $250 and threw a set of Ahrends on it. I should have been more clear,
that I meant a bull barrel. I don't know why I typed taper. Sorry about that.
