Plinking in San Diego?

Just purchased my gun today and am looking for an outdoor area to take my son plinking. Does anyone know any areas in San Diego to go plinking?

Gotta be a range on base at Miramar and or Pendleton. Are they open to the public?

Please keep in mind that this was many years ago when I was stationed in San Diego but we used to head up highway 8 and find places out towards Alpine and a lot of times would go past Alpine. Plenty of places to shoot out past Alpine. At least there was 20yrs ago.

Another 20 year ago suggestion is Otay mesa. Used to go out there 4 wheelin and shooting. Just had to keep an eye out for boarder jumpers.

Go to Cal guns web site and look around. No easy to get to backcountry sites left in San Diego. Pay to shoot ranges about all that is left.

Since this is your first firearm, if you haven't already done so, I suggest that you and your children take a firearms safety course. Your local gun store should have a list of safety course instructors.

My first thought was San Ysidro... that close to Tijuana nobody would likely notice the sound of additional gun fire!

I was back in San Deigo last summer. last time I was there was 1977. We used to shoot out in otay, Not today it's all built up with houses. I think it would be best as others have suggested to use a range at a sportsmans club. I was ammazed at the growth on SD since I was gone. Hope to return next summer out on the Point for some PIRA work. Good luck!
