Plinkster 22 on Ruger Mark IV and SW Victory

This is one of the best reviews I've ever seen. For now, I'll stay with my S&W model 41, since it works fine (as long as I'm using ammo it likes), is VERY easy/quick to break down and clean, and is far more accurate than my current talents. If I HAD to choose, I would probably go with the Ruger IV, now that it is easy to take apart and put back together. I've read negative comments about the S&W take-down screw working loose, or needing a special tool. The biggest thing I got from this review is that 98% reliable is very, very good for any semi-auto .22.

If I buy another 22 LR semi automatic pistol it will be the new Ruger Mark IV. I love my Ruger Mark II and it's not that hard to take a part and clean.

As much as I like S&W products, I have to say that I would buy the Ruger Mk IV. I'd go with the stainless steel Hunter and replace the glow worm sights with the ones on the target model.

I agree the Mk IV Hunter wins in the looks dept. Other than the sight, stainless, and wood grip, is there any other differences? Why they don't offer wood in the target model is a puzzle to me.

Personally I think the Browning Buck Mark needs thrown into the mix as well. I have not shot the Mark IV yet, but have shot the SW22 and a 7-1/4" barrel Buck Mark. Pretty similar experience in the hands. I ran out and bought the Victory ASAP after the comparison.

Yeah there are a few growing pains from the SW22 initially from new owners. But that problem seems to be fixed by numerous shooters on these forums or YouTube. I'm going to try the #61 o-ring and a small "dot" of blue thread lock procedure myself before I take the split lock washer approach. So for less than a $1 mine should be good to go.

The Buck Mark was a very sweet gun also. None of them local for me. Gunbroker shows a few of them available in the long barrel version. Not a single Mark IV locally. Plenty of Mark III's though, but no real discounts from what I've seen at LGS's.

I still may end up with 1 of each brand eventually.

The blue thread lock works just fine. Everyone makes a big deal that the barrel loosens up a tad bit after a few hundred rounds. Many other guns have to be tightened at the range from screw being loosened after several hundred rounds. It's really a great gun!

I will have to agree. If I get another pistol, it would definitely be the Ruger IV, but I'm waiting for the 22/45 that 22 Plinkster said will be out soon.

If one can afford to, buy them both. They're both great pistols. I don't think you can ever find the "perfect" pistol. One will always have something the other doesn't have or vise versa. The S&W is amazing and well within budget. The Ruger is also amazing and maybe a tad overpriced, but still worth it. I wish I could afford both.

If you are going to use the No. 61 O-ring then you do not need anything else with it especially any color of locktight. The O-ring is more then enough by itself and dirt cheap as well.

Of the current crop of (relatively) inexpensive .22LR target pistols, I consider the Victory and the Buckmark Hunter to be a tie. I shot them extensively side by side a month ago. They each have a few pluses over the other, and a few minuses. But in the end, I'd find it hard to choose. I have the Victory and will not be trading it on a Buckmark, but probably I'll get a Buckmark Hunter to ADD to the Victory.

The Rugers are not quite as impressive to me. I have (actually, "had") an old Mark II target, and it is indeed a nice pistol. Just recently I passed it on to my son. That made both him and me feel good inside - to give him something that was special to me (the first gun I ever bought on my own!) And I also have a Mark III 22/45 Lite. Again, a nice pistol, but it's actually a step down from the older Mark II IMHO. But both the Victory and the Buckmark have the Rugers beat in my book. I don't know about the new Mark IV's. I've never seen one to have formed an opinion yet.
