Hello all,

I recently got my first M&P 10. :)

Totally stock except I swapped out the butstock and added an older Leupold 3.5x9 on a Warne Xskel cantilever mount.

Just now getting a break in our awful spring weather and my work schedule so I spent all day yesterday at the range with boxes of FGMM and Prvi Match + a couple of boxes Hirtenberger for getting on paper.

I got the scope zero close by using a laser bore sight at home after mounting it.

Once at the range yesterday I got on paper at 25yds (in the 9 ring) and them moved it out to 100 yds.

Although still on the target, my groupings were so erratic I literally couldn't make and adjustments in windage and elavation. My POI was all over 8 and 9 ring. One shot high and to the right the next low and to the left etc. etc.

After about 10 rounds of this nonsense I stopped shooting the FGMM and switched to the Prvi match. Same thing. Then back the the Hirt. Same thing. No consistent groupings. Unless you want to count being on the paper at 100 a group.

My first instinct was that my new scope mount had come lose. But nope, it was tight and true.

So here is my question, could it be my old 90's vintage Leupy gone bad? It had been on another rifle that mostly sat in my safe so I cant say I have shot with it recently.

Just looking for some more experienced opinions from you all before I start chasing this down.

Thanks in Advance

Try another scope or some iron sights to see if it is the scope or the rifle. Some have had barrel issues with their barrels and the stamping near the muzzle coming though the rifling but it doesn't seem common. But it could be a scope issue too.

I doubt that you are experiencing a problem with your scope. I have had a similar problem with Remington 700s that have grouping issues.

I found that the leade/throat of the barrels were cut long, requiring significant bullet jump. Once I measured the leade and started to load my ammo long, my groups tightened up and the point of impact became more consistent. If this is your problem, your solutions may be limited due to magazine feeding. If you have more than 0.010" of bullet jump, the only positive solution may be to replace the barrel and have the leade cut to the proper length.

Before we jump to conclusions, how is your rifle being braced for firing? Are you shooting with a sling, off a bipod or rest, or a sandbag? Is the barrel free floating? All of these have a bearing on your rifle's accuracy.

lrrifleman,

Good point forgot to mention in my haste to post. I was shooting from a bench rest with sandbags.

Man I hope its not the throat.

I guess I'll get some iron sight on her and see what we see.
