So...I've got a new 442 and a new Uncle Mike's pocket holster. Can't seem to remove gun from pocket without the holster coming out. Seems to be the same whether it's shorts, jeans, loose, tight, etc. At the moment I'm thinking the holster is just not broken in enough to let go of the gun quickly, but are there any other techniques I should use? I've tried pressing the holster into my leg as I draw to get more grip, snagging the holster on the pocket seam, a little index finger push as I draw, etc.

Maybe I could sew an alligator clip or something to it...

I'm not sure of how your holster is set up, but most good pocket holsters have a tab at the rear to catch on the pocket. I have a M340PD in my pocket now in a Galco holster in snug jeans. No way will that holster come out without me intentionally trying to get it out, and even then it takes some doing.
If your holster is not made like this, look for another one. I really like mine.

I use a holster made by Robert(?) Mika, which has sort of a rubber-coated fabric strip fastened all the way around it, to keep it from slipping as the gun is drawn. I highly recommend his holsters; he's a stand-up guy also.

Here's a photo showing a couple of Mika Pocket Holsters, one square cut & the other round (bottom profile.)

What I think makes it so easy to draw from a Mike PH is that Bob puts some sort of flexible insert near the top between the inner & outer layers of the holster. This helps keep the holster splayed open some at the top but it (the insert) doesn't provide so much pressure that it can't compress easily once in a pocket.

These two holsters hadn't been used much when this photo was taken.
They have since broken in considerably........

I used an Uncle Mike's for quite a while until I went to a nemisis and now my own horsehide. Never had that problem but a simple solution is when gripping the gun slide your thumb against the lip of the holster and slide it down over the rear sight. Hope my explaination is clear.

I use Uncle Mikes with no real problems, but breakin can take a while. There is a band of grippy rubberized tape around the middle, and maybe it has gotten so dirty that the grippiness is gone?

I used uncle mikes while my real pocket holster was being made. In some jeans the holster would stay in place, in others the holster would come out of my pocket. What I would do it kind of press my gun up against my leg while I was drawing. That helped me out a lot.

I agree with those who think a break in period is indicated. You could do a little bending and manipulation of the holster out of the pocket to loosen it up. I don't have trouble with mine coming out and while I own a number of more expensive pocket holsters I keep going back to Uncle Mike's becaues it conceals better.

Technique might also help. Try gripping the gun and placing your thumb on the area on the back where the hammer would be if it wasn't hammerless. Keep your trigger finger away from the side of the holster as much as possible. Then rock the gun and holster slightly forward in the pocket while drawing which should cause the front top of the holster to catch on the inside of your pants pocket. Worth a try. Good luck.

When you draw, wrake the gun up and forward hitting the front edge of your pocket. That should allow the holster to separate.
But the UM are my least favorite of the pocket holsters b/c of the inconsistent release and the way that they mold around the gun at the top. You need to have a stiffer top for consistent release. I Prefer the Nemesis which is more formed or the Mika.

+1. One it's broken in, it's GTG.

With my Bodyguard 380 I have found the Galco leather was good but the spring set into the top would become uncomfortable on hotter days. I cut it off and have found it to be much better and is now my only pocket holster for the 380.
Be safe, Frank.

I use an Uncle Mike's Sidekick Size 1 for my Rohrbaugh R9 and standard carry is in my right front jeans pocket.
It does have a clip (plastic) that slips over the outer edge of the pocket, but that doesn't do much to retain the holster.

However, you don't wear a pocket pistol to get into a fast-draw shootout with a predator. You pocket carry for the convenience and deep concealability.
If you attempt to fast-draw, then the UM holster will come out with the pistol, but a slow, deliberate draw allows you to easily pull the pistol by itself.
I'm sure there will be those who argue with my opinion, but the few times I actually "thought" that I might have to draw my pocket pistol, it was exclusively in situations that I recognized as being potentially threatening and if I had chosen to draw (one time I did but kept it concealed in my palm at the ready... no one knew I had it), I had all the time in the world to do so because I am more of a believer in "be aware and alert to control a situation" self-defense than I am in "wait until the predator has a gun pointed at you and then out-draw him" kind of self-defense.

Pocket Holster

I've been pocket carrying a 642 for awhile now using an Uncle Mikes pocket holster, with no problems drawing from the pocket. A size 3 is recommended for the 442/642. I use a size 4 Uncle Mikes, it's just a little bigger and conceals more of the weapon. Good luck!

This technique seems to be working well. Won't be winning any fast draw competitions, but I can get it out quicker than my wallet;)

Had one myself, used it with a Taurus 85 which has a hammer. First trick was, as said, cover the hammer with the thumb. Even without a hammer it helps, makes your hand smaller- kinda.... But I ended up getting a Galco, it has the extension at the back of the holster that catches, and keeps the holster in the pants.
