Adair has a population of 794 and a 3 person police department.

I guess the ATF would be a bit suspicious of the chief buying 90 machine guns, and a M134 minigun.

A CBS News investigation found dozens of law enforcement leaders — sheriffs, captains, lieutenants, chiefs of police — buying and illegally selling firearms, even weapons of war, across 23 U.S. states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C., from the Deep South to the Midwest, Northeast and California coast.

A nationwide review of government audits and court records over the last 20 years uncovered at least 50 cases of police illegally selling their weapons online, through dealers, out of their homes or the back of their cars. In many cases, the weapons were sold to gun enthusiasts, often at steep markups as high as 10 times what they were bought for.

The Adair IA police chief, Bradley Wendt, Has one of the longest lists of court cases in Iowa that I have ever seen, not to mention the federal stuff. From the time he was a teenager (beer), constant minor traffic violations, being sued by somebody or he was suing somebody. Don't know how he had time to be in LE. Most of the money he made must have made his lawyers rich. Or maybe he paid them with machine guns? When the case first broke there was mention of something along that line.
The 5 year sentence was just a slap on the hand and he is appealing.

Late wife#1 told me that one of her great-uncles was known as the dodgy sheriff in the Iowa county her mother came from, back in the 40s and 50s. Must be something in the water.

That's insane!

Owning a machine gun or any NFA weapon illegally has a charge up to 10 years and a $250K fine. I figured he would be charged for each gun he sold.

He may have technically legally owned them, but could never sell them.

Has this been in the news for a while? Read similar account a year or so ago? All my LEO buddies back in 70’s got to keep any weapon(s) they took off offenders. One “ got” a 45 Colt 2 shot derringer. He brought it to my range on the farm and we shot it. 1 round was enough for me, LOL

Who hired this guy in Adair IA? Granted, they have to select from the general population, but they should have dumped this guy's application in the bin at first glance.

You’ve got to wonder who, in this day and age would think they could get away with this.

Town of 794 needs a police department? Sheeshe...didn't know Iowa was such a dangerous place.

The cases dates to 2022, sentencing was just recently.

One of my long time good friends is a very successful realtor and purchased many nice guns from a Police Chief in his home town in TX that I won't mention. His father was best friends with the Police Chief and supposedly got the guns using his police discount. One day my friend gets a call from the Texas Department of Public Safety and they said those guns were bought with city money for the police department and the Chief was pocketing all the money when he sold them. They said he needed to drive to the state line immediately from OKC to turn them over to the TX Highway Patrol! He said "I have a closing to go to I can't leave today"! They said wait just a minute....O.K. Oklahoma City Police will be at your house in a half hour to take the guns. My friend never saw his guns or his money again and he had Sigs, HKs, Glocks, Brownings, Remingtons, and lots of other nice brands.
