Police get a new tool to stop drivers: Beware the Grappler!

I was doing a little research on this thing, trying to figure out how it works. And I came up with three or four videos of that stop.

That was a stolen car. I say was a stolen car because now it's a wreck, but at least they caught the bad guys.

I wonder who buys the victim a new car, since the police destroyed his? The thief? Doubtful. The police? Even more doubtful. The victim's insurance? Yeah, that's probably it.

That occurred in Livonia MI. We have no fault insurance, so the owners insurance company footed the bill (unless the owner only had PLPD).

He could sue the thief for damages, but you can't get blood out of turnip.

I agree with gjgalligan…it was only a matter of time before the perp totaled it trying to escape anyway, And there's the very high probability that innocents would have been injured or killed in the process had the grappler not been deployed.

I have seen one that wraps itself around the tire and axle. Thought that was what this was but I guess not. End result was good though. At least it wasn't a pit that ended up with someone dying.

Far safer than most pursuits and the PIT technique (although if only the offender is injured, which is not at all assured, my level of concern is immeasurably small). Using any type of force to overcome resistance is never going to be pretty. It does not have to be. It does need to be effective.

I believe that the Finnish experimented with a harpoon device!

Now that would be amusing.

Wonder if that's what inspired this device.
