How do 'smiths polish the flutes in a cylinder while leaving the rest a matt finish?
And also how do they polish up the cylinder turn line as well?

Great question. I have polished metal for years but never considered polishing the flutes. I just bring them back to that 150 scratched look.
Thinking about this problem, I'd probably start using Cratex bullet hones, coarse to fine.

After that, felt bobs with Clover compound up to the finest (1200?) grade.
Finish with black, red and white rouge on more felt bobs.

OK, that said, let's hear from someone who's actually done this!

I've played with similar situation on one of the rifles I built.

Polishing the bull barrel flutes.

What I did was use abrasive rolls on a die grinder followed by felt bobs and rouge. Afterwards, putting the brushed finish back on the rest of the barrel(mostly at the edges of the flutes).

The problem is doing JUST the flutes. There is no real guaranteed way to keep the work in the flute. So plan on putting the brushed finish back at the edges.

If its a blasted finish, mask up the flutes once polished and blast again.
