Poll: Are you a cat person?

There was a large, tan, long haired cat that would hang around by the shed and woodpile starting about ten years ago. He (?) was pretty brazen, but didn't let me get closer than ten feet,he'd hop the fence and leave. Five years ago I brought home a kitten and only saw him a few times after that. Last night I fired up the Ford and who should run out,hop up on the stone wall and glare lol. He's still around

I like both. My Seal Point Siamese died last year at age 18. I have had mutts and pure bred dogs over the years. My favorites were a Husky and a Border Collie that took care for a shot time for someone else.

Our tortise shell cat Peanut cries when I leave and comes to meet me at the door when I get home at night. She follows me into the bathroom in the AM. Funny part is when I leave the bathroom she walks out in front of me. She turns to look behind her to see if I'm head back to bed or staying up. When I reach the kitchen she turns to look to see if I am going in or heading into the living room. At the dining room table she's laying at my feet. She's approaching the finish line at around 18 years old.

We are Dog people, but also like cats from a distance. I am super allergic to cats…

I was allergic to cats as a kid. Somehow, in my late 30's I got over that. Since then we have had both cats and dogs in the house. We have cats that meet us at the door, just like the dogs. They sleep with us, sit on the couch with me, show me alot of affection.
I also tend to appreciate them more when it's raining or snowing and I know I don't have to take them outside for a walk or worry they will bark and disturb the neighbors. It's raining right now and both my dogs decided they needed to go out. of course.

Holy hairballs, Batman! That is a powerful lot of UBER-SERIOUS FLUFFY you have there! :D

Do I like cats. Ooh yeah, I love them. They are especially good with carrots, and potatoes with white gravy and a nice white wine.

People do not own a cat a cat owns people.
Dogs have masters, cats have slaves or servants.
In ancient Egypt cats were worshiped as gods and they have never forgotten.

Actually, I prefer the company of cats to most people. I have had them in my life for most of my life and would be very lonely without one. Even one that didn't like me would be better than not having one in my life.

This last CAT is absolutely the ugliest cat I've ever seen.

Sad to say that our Peanut may be near the end as I posted a day or so ago.
My wife told me she was having a hard time moving her one leg last night. She put her on a pillow beside our bed last night.
I kind of thought she would pass in the night but this morning I was glad to see her sitting in the living room when I woke. That was short lived as when she walks she is having great difficulty, especially on vinyl footing. Carpet seems better for her because she's getting better traction.
I moved her litter box because she had to go downstairs to get to it and I know she won't make the trip.
I'll give her a day or so to see if she improves but I am not optimistic.

Before we moved, we lived on a dead end road in a very rural wooded area. It was the favorite dumping spot for unwanted cats. The population of chipmunks and squirrels and other small animals and birds really suffered with all of the feral cats. We had so many feral cats around, I would shoot them on sight.

BTDT. It is terrible when a beloved pet is clearly on the way out. You feel quite helpless. But they can feel the love around them, which is all we can offer. This Thanksgiving may be dampened by Peanut's passing, but you can still be thankful for all the joy that she has brought you over the years.

@BigBoy99: I acquired my black cat, Smudge, because someone left a pregnant cat in my neighbour's driveway several years ago. She was not a cat person (horses are her thing) but she took it in and gave it food and shelter in her baen. It gave birth to four kittens and I got Smudge, who is curled up around my left arm on the couch as I type this one-handed :D

This was him at just over 3 months when I brought him home in September 2015:

I never had much use for cats until we got kind of stuck with a kitten, named Orville in 1984. He ended up about 25 pounds, and was for many years the vet's "Worst Patient Ever". If you put him into his carrier to take him there, his rage would kick in almost instantly. By the time you got him to the vet's office, he was on "kill", and would attack anything that he could get to. He was famous for rolling in his own turds when in full rage mode, basically saying, "So you want to mess with me?". But as angry as he got, no matter how much he wanted to hurt him, the evil one arrived when he was 16, and he was helpless. All King wanted to do was play with him. He didn't understand until 2 weeks before the end. The angrier he got, the more King liked it. He was very upset when his new playmate went sour and had to be put down.

After Orville went, we were catless until King and sister Molly passed away, then I got these two:

Wink on the left, Timmy on the right. Wink is very affectionate, when she isn't trying to kill me. Her rages are just amazing. She almost had one this morning, when I grabbed Timmy to keep him out of my kitchen cupboards. She thought I was attacking him and came at me at about 75% of her normal rage level. I snapped a garbage bag at her and it seemed to confuse her enough to stop her attacks long enough for her to run out of steam. Timmy seems to think of me only as a source of food and body heat. I don't think he cares about me in any way. And as far as smarts go, my dopiest dog, Gus, was much much smarter than any of my 3 cats. Timmy falls for the same method to keep him from getting out of my apartment, herd him in between the open door and the wall, walk out. He's mystified as to what is happening. For 4+ years!!

I am not a not really a pet person. I like animals, and don't mind a friendly dog or cat. I don't want to commit to taking care of them for the long term.

That said, when we visit our daughter, her dog thinks I am there just to play with him....

And visiting with my nephew recently, his cat decided that I made a nice chair.

I'm good with both, as long as they are someone else's and are well behaved.

If I were to get a pet today, it would be a cat.

As a kid we had a really cool cat that disappeared one day. As I recall it showed back up a month later (or so), skinny as heck, and it died a couple days later. Guessing it got locked in somewhere. Poor thing. When first married, we had 2 cats. Both really nice. One died of feline liver cancer and we had to give the other to a neighbor when we moved across country. No cats since then.
We had a similar experience with a beautiful male Siamese. I think he stowed away in a Salvation Army truck we had at the house picking up furniture we were donating.

We loved that cat. Then he was just gone. And then one morning I go downstairs and there he is at the food dish (we had a cat door to the outside). Well that poor guy had lost so much weight finding his way home that he didn't survive. Very very sad. But the amazing thing is how he found his way home from God knows where. I mean we're talking two or three months. That he was even able to find his way home after all that time remains one of life's miracles.

He was an amazing cat. Miss him dearly. So yes, even though I started this thread dissing cats I will say that Joey was one very special cat.

Awww, come on, PBY's are in a class all by themselves. Used to go in them at air shows many years ago.
