Poll: Are you a cat person?

I always hated cats growing up. We moved into our new house in 2008 with real hardwood floors that I installed. The wife brings home a tiny kitten that had been abandoned by her mother and had been injured. I told her it would have to stay on the screen porch. No way a cat was getting fur on my floors. Ninety degree days were too hot for her to be outside, according to my wife. We thought she would be blind by her terrible looking eyes but my wife was faithful with the eyedrops and her leg healed up. Kitty, as we call her, is still in the house and my lap is the only one she will jump up to. She has an internal alarm clock that goes off at 4:45 am. We learned to shut our bedroom doors because otherwise she will jiggle the swivel pull handles on our bedside table to wake us. She goes around the back way into our bathroom and wobbles the trash can back and forth on the tile floor to make sure we don't forget to feed her. She used to run down the hallway for her breakfast but I taught her to walk slow at heal so as not to wake our teenage daughter. Kitty is a big ole overweight black calico that softened my heart towards cats.

"Awww, come on, PBY's are in a class all by themselves."

Indeed they are, and ti's a good thing too. I'm really jealous cuz i've never been able to fly in one. But they are ugly none the same. Looking at them it's a wonder the fuselage hangs on.

"If you don't like cats or prefer another type of pet, that is fine too. Comments about shooting cats, using them for bait and such are not only stupid but disrespectful of others. There is absolutely no valid reason for those kinds of posts."

Prairieviper, surely you know these comments are made in jest. Though I've never met any member here I'm fairly certain none here would intentally harm as helpless a creature as a cat, or kitten. I admit there are times when my Kallie is on the verge of getting her ears boxed but then I figure out what it is she wants and we go on. Please relax and enjoy the banter. Though I might suggest they make good targets if I were to see someone harm a cat, I'm far more likely to take the side of the cat and perform some surgical house calls from a goodly distance. OSOK

Well well well.....

Had cats, got a dog, lovem' all, people not so much, sidewinding bottomfeeders you run into everyday the four legged kind are a breath of fresh air.

My daughters young cat, Marnie.
A friend of her's, neighbor, threw it outside, saying he didn't care what happened to it.

Glad to hear that Marnie ended up with her loving home and family where she is valued as a member. No comment about my opinion of the neighbor that would discard a beautiful and innocent animal...

I enjoy other people's cats. Have met some really good ones.
I do not care for a cat's personality. Too aloof, have no need for human interaction like a dog does. There is no cooperative pack behavior with cats.
But I certainly understand that those behaviors are attractive to some folks and admire their relationship with their cats. Just not my thing.
As for litter boxes, anyone who has an indoor cat will have a litter box and all will tell you " can't even smell it!! We clean it every day." Or "we use brand X super puper anti stink cat litter and it works perfectly."
Y'all need to do a reality check. Cat poo and pee stink like no other and there is no masking it.
Cat owners are like smokers who cannot smell their ashtrays anymore. The fact you no longer smell it, does not mean it doesn't stink.

And of course we cat owners only hang out with other cat owners, so we never notice the smell! Like farmers wo never notice the smell of the manure :D

If I move and build a new house for my gf & I, the litter boxes (because we will have multiple cats) will be in a recess in the hallway/mud room fitted with a vent fan that will minimize this. Thanks for reminding me that I need to add this to the list of essential items :)

Here's another of Mrs. X62503's cat, lounging on her chair by the fireplace. Ours keep our house rodent-free; they earn their keep.

I have told the wife that if she ever brought a cat home that I would be moving out. Here is why.

When my Dad was in Vietnam, another serviceman down the street was also in Nam. The wife went to Hawaii for R&R with him, and had my grandmother, who was staying with us while my Dad was away, watch her children.

She agreed to do this before seeing the inside of the house. They had a number of cats, and their excrement (any other word will get me in trouble here) was everywhere. My grandmother had me help her clean up, and it was a nasty, stinking mess. I don't think any of those cats was litter trained, and they were all consigned by us to the garage.

Two days after the woman left, her youngest, 18 months old, became very sick. He soon ended up in the hospital, and even though my grandmother tried to get in contact with the family, she received no response. Even the Red Cross had trouble getting in touch with them.

The woman returned, one day after her child died in the hospital, probably from the foul conditions in that house. An investigation was made by the authorities, and fortunately my grandmother was quickly cleared, even though the woman had some explaining to do. She also refused to pay my grandmother what she had agreed to, but she just wanted to be done with that family.

Yes, it was probably a case of bad owners rather than bad cats, but something like that made an impression on my young teenage self. As a result, I have no use for cats, now more than 50 years on.

Cats and dogs can both be great pets but they are different in a lot of ways. We've had a total of 12 cats over the last 31 years as well as 3 dogs. I don't know that I could honestly say I prefer one over the other, but as of right now all we have is one cat.

The 3 dogs we've had all had pretty similar personalities maybe because we got them all as puppies and raised them all the same way.

Our cats have often been adopted when somebody else didn't want them for one reason or another and a couple of them I'm sure had a pretty rough life before they got here. Some of them took a while to trust us, but they all turned out to be good pets eventually.

This past week I saw a mouse in the basement a couple times but he was too smart to get caught in the traps I set. He wasn't too smart for Shadow though, as we found his carcass prominently displayed one morning.

This is Shadow in his favorite resting spot.
