Most of the time one of my .44 Mags on the hip... Every now and then I'll be in the mood to carry my 681 in a shoulder holster in addition.

Sometimes a 12 gauge in a sling comes along too.
 
Dave, that is a beautiful holster. Is that an El Paso Saddelry? I forget the name of that holster type, but I remember there were two guys, Tom Threepersons and another fellow, who came up with holsters at the same time. That looks like the variation that the other fellow came up with... Kind of like a Threepersons but a little closer to the old west style.

That's just one I cobbled up today...

It's kinda a cross-breed between a El Paso 1930's Austin, A.W. Brill & a Tom Threepersons' type or style.
I've built and worn several like it for years now.

I'm fixin' to take up the rockin' chair at the end of the year, so maybe I'll build a few custom belts & holsters. You know 'one of a kind' sort of thing.

A 44 Mtn Gun in a Mernickle Performance Series holster OWB, under a vest or shirt.

2nd Choice a Ruger 44 Spl FT 45/8s in a Nelson Leather version of a Threepersons rig on the same belt, under an outer garment.

I also wear a belt slide with 6 rounds and a skinning knife.

I voted OWB, but the truth is depends on what gun, and what I am doing.

Hip carry is nice, and normally comfortable, but not with a pack. When I have on a backpack I typically also use a fanny pack.

If I am carrying one of my Glocks it tends to be IWB since that's the type of holsters I have for those guns.
 
I also use a safariland tactical drop leg holster. I actualy prefer this as it is much easier access especialy in the cold months.

The guy that came up with the holster that Dave's is based on was a Texas Ranger LeeTrimble back about 1920.

He went to AW Brill and Tom Threepersons went to Tio Sam Myres, and the rest is history.

Dave has created his own version of the old classic and done a durn fine job of it too.

Like I said a couple of weeks ago in another thread. " I think you've got another career waitin' on deck!"

To get this thread back on track, we ain't got no woods here in SE Wyoming, but when I go to the ranch, I pack OWB.

I can't believe I'm the only vote for shoulder holster. I just feel a lot more comfortable with the gun off my hip when I'm climbing etc.

Dave, beautiful holster. I made one for my M29 8 3/8 because I was having trouble finding one in leather. It's so bad...how bad is it? It's so bad my wife thought I was carving up some firewood tender....

I guess I have to stick with my day job a while longer.

I think it's got just a little cant on it...But, if need be a feller can still slide it around to the crossdraw position,
out of the way for ropin' and leadin' a pack horse, ect...

I actually like the old tanker style holsters as well, they work really well at keeping the pistol out of the way as well in the brush, when back packing, etc.
 
I was torn when I answered the poll between OWB belt holster and the fanny-pack as I use both methods, but opted for the latter as I prolly do that the most. I'm glad I did because OWB is winning by a large margin, and fanny-pack didn't have a single vote until I gave it a scratch!
 
I use both belt and shoulder holsters and often carry my S&W #317 AirLite .22 in my right side vest pocket. I use a small of the back holster for my Glock #31 because that is the only holster I have for it.
 
I prefer ebibg concealed all the time. It's nobodies business if I'm carrying. I live in the desert, no real woods around so in the pocket or IWB with the shirt tail out.
 
Open Carry in a drop leg holster when in the woods, it is so easy to access it if needed.
 
Poll does not address what "carry in woods" is intended to be. Just "woods walking", hiking, riding horse of ATV, climbing or doing serious work in woods, pistol carried in addition to hunting gun, for hunting specifically?

I agree with AZretired. Prefer concealed. Backpacking I have a camera pouch on my shoulder strap that keeps the gun at the ready but doesn't shout "gun". After I shed the big pack it goes in a fanny pack or holster under my shirt if full sized, or in a cargo pocket if carrying a J frame.
 
Bump to an interesting thread. I voted shoulder carry because I used to use the military nylon flap holster because it would fit several different guns & kept them dirt free. I just received my M3 repo for the 1911 & Victory shoulder holster so this season it will be shoulder carry.
 
I'm looking for a shoulder holster for a 3" 696 for woods carry...concealed. Maybe an Alessi Bodyguard or something specifically designed for ccw. Since I'm in CA, there are way too many gun-unfriendly folks in the woods and lake areas and would prefer to put the gun on my ccw and then legally carry it out of sight of paranoid eyes.

Any suggestions?
 
Depends.....

If I'm on a place I know the owners they I usually go OC and don't worry about it.

If it's just out in the back country I find covering it up makes life easier as you don't get any pointed questions from local law or wardens.

Now one thing I must point out:I don't go too crazy about concealing it in the woods,if you see a peek of handle or my coat flops open I don't sweat it,my thought is unless I run across some idiot hippy tree hugger I doubt anyone I meet will say squat.

Good to see my home state hasn't changed......in fact.....it seems to have gotten worse.

Also I wasn't answering you,I was answering the OP.

I know the state sucks but take a deep breath,calm down.

As I said OP I ether open carry or just put a coat/jacket/vest over it,OWB is best for long term comfort and lots of walking,but IWB can be done too.
 
not hunting... just around park areas and lakes while fishing or hiking or general camping.
 
Prefer OWB but during archery season, IWB is required and allowed in FL.
