Inbetween busy schedules and tight $ from some vehicular situations, I haven't had enough range time, to shoot myself, to work on my own skills. ( Usually spend most of my attention on other people, either doing outreach, or coaching them.) But I have Quals coming up, and I wanted a live fire tuneup first. But I am now left in state of ambiguity and uncertainty. My problem probably relates to too many simultaneous variables.

Guns I hadn't previously put through their paces.
Ammo brands and weights I'm not familar with ( shooting at range that required purchasing ammo from them ).
My rustiness.
Reduced "weak" hand strength post injury ( I am 100% by physical therapy standards, but pre-injury had equal strength both hands).

When I was doing pure accuraccy testing, I was disappointed . My 10yd groups would have been mediocre for 25yds. Was it me ? Was it the guns ? Was the ammo either poor generally, or my guns didn't "like" them ? I really don't know.

To add to the variables, one gun was a 4in Service Six, with the Ruger version of Magna grips. The other was a 2in M36 no dash sq butt wearing Pachymer Grippers. I would have expected the usual medium frame vs J frame point spread. But no, they gave similar groups. Is it the Pachmyers gave that much advantage, or is the high milage Service Six have accuracy issues ? I don't know.

But at least when I moved on to rapid-ish first shot drills from low ready, I was keeping most rounds in the 10 ring.

I feel your pain.
I would begin with adding more range time to regain and bolster your skills. This would also to a degree reduce some of the variables that you mention. I wish you success in future trips to the range!

I believe you're way overthinking the problem. I think you need more range time while purging your mind of preconceived notions.

Busy schedule and tight $ = dry fire. There is no substitute for live fire, but I feel dry is a great supplement. It also might help with your physical therapy, restoring muscle memory/range of motion.

Had the annual quals earlier today. Did 90% and 88% .

At one level I could shrug, and call it good enough for average defensive skills.

On the other hand, my second worst quals in 35yrs . And the worse year was done a day after being slammed by an airbag

Everybody has bad days.....

Fatigued, nervous, not feeling well? Unsure after a too long layoff? The best thing to do is calmly pack up and come back and try again in a better frame of mind.
