Potentially, an unpopular question!

Years ago I had some military headstamp 45 ACP with small primers. I pitched them in the 1980's!

The 308 cases with small RIFLE primers is for 308 Palma (higher pressure than 308 Winchester). I also found a single round of Large Rifle Primered 300 Blackout. It took me 30 seconds to pitch that one!

Fortunately, I can accommodate any primer size in handgun cartridges. I have two presses set up. One uses SPP and the other LPP. Switching dies is easy.

Rifle cartridge? I can easily load a years supply with my 310 tool so it really does not matter, LRP or SRP.

Kevin,

You are old school! I have three 310 tools and a bunch of dies for them. Also a Tru-Line Jr for when my hands get tired.

But…I also appreciate modern improvements. The two presses I mentioned are Dillon 450s. One for SPP and one for LPP.

AJ,

I was a competitive shooter in PPC competition. It was easy for me to shoot 1500-2000 rounds a week between matches and practice. The 310 could NOT keep up!

Kevin

I shot IPSC in the mid to late 80's. Shot 1K a week in practice. I was using a Lyman Spar-t Press and then bought a Square Deal B. As soon as I quit shooting IPSC (moved from Calif to N.C.), I sold the Square Deal B.

Ivan, I thought the SPP .45's were a more recent invention.

I first ran across SPP 45 ACP brass in the early 1990's. Then I pitched it in the trash can. No idea what brand it was but it has been around for at least 30 years.

In WWI military ammo production went from 100,000,000 rounds per year to 3.5 Billion!

The current primer shortage is my third! Our nation has had more than I know about. (National Security issues and all.)
Strategic material (copper, brass and nickel) shortages also caused, Steel jacketed 45 ACP, 38 Special, and 38 Long Colt in WWI, Steel cased 45 ACP rounds in WWII. (and steel pennies, and silver nickels) We see these technologies used in ammo from other countries, but seldom in the US!

My third shortage also. I was pretty well prepared for this one. The first one was partially caused by 2 pieces of information. The first one (not true) was President Clinton was going to force primer companies to make only primers that would have a shelf life of 1 year. The second was a sentence by Jeff Cooper in Guns & Ammo that if society should collapse, primers and 22 ammo might become the currency.

I keep expecting a switch to 'MPP' - 'medium pistol primers' at any time now.......

Last time I ordered a new box of Lapua 6.5 Creedmoor brass I was surprised to open it and find the primer pockets were for SRP. It's made its way into bottleneck rifle brass as well. Now I have both. They shoot just fine, and now I can reload that caliber with whatever primer I have more of.

The small rifle primer in rifle match brass has been a thing for a long time. It has to do with consistency of velocity. Blame/credit the bench rest and Palma Match crowds. Palma Match involves 15 rounds each at 800, 900 & 1000 yards. Velocity variation at those ranges can cause major elevation errors.

7.62 x 39

One not posted, I have about half Winchester 7.62 x 39 with SRP and the other half is mixed headstamps with LRP. Most is indoor range pickups from AK's. My 7.62 x 39 is on a PSA build of an AR, the AK's sure do beat the hell out of their brass, my AR, not much at all.

Just started loading this caliber when the wolf ammo went to $10+ per 20. Already have the powder, primers, and 125 gr 308 bullets. The AR has a less common .308 bore so don't need the special 123 gr .311 bullets.

Gives me 1 MOA at 100 yds.

I consider SPP in .45 ACP a violation of standards, a serious blunder.

Wait . . . I looked up .45 ACP at SAAMI, and its standard says "Large or small primers." (!) So it's legal.

I assume it was LPP for many years, then changed at some time. I don't want that d... SPP brass around, cos I know that someday I'll try to seat a LPP into it. SPP in a traditionally LPP gun is DANGEROUS. Not the primer, the pocket for it.

You know, the way primers are expensive....

...and scarce now, it wouldn't be bad to have a stock of SPP .45 ACP brass if LPP get to be unobtainium. All they would do would be to take up space until they were needed. Other than that it wouldn't cost anything extra and might even be a good thing to have at some point.

They never ran out of Large pistol primers around here. Only Large Rifle. You may be preparing for something that will never happen.
