POWDER TYPES AND INVENTORY

powder

I have a LOT of Unique and Red Dot which I use, but also keep as my "back up reserve." These days I am into Vihtavuori powders and regularly use N310 and N32c,(target loads), N340, 3N37, and N105 (for magnum stuff). I have also been working up some accurate 45 colt loads with WST lately.

I got lucky at the little Fishersville, VA gun show today and scored an 8# jug of HP-38 for $165. I plan to split it with my buddy Dale53, then my share of it, along with the 5# or so of Bullseye I've gotten nailed down, will keep me in 38 Spls and 32 S&W Longs for a long time to come. I discovered that I still have almost 4# of Red Dot and a new 4# jug of W296, and one of 700X as well as some Unique (about 4#) and some Green Dot, and a little 2400 as well. For rifles and hot 327 loads, I have nearly 20# of the discontinued H108 and almost 8# of 4759. I guess I just need to check my primer stash and sort the brass and I'll be good to go... most of my bullets are cast by me, of course.

Maybe I can relax and start reloading a little more! :D

As a veteran Ant I have gathered for winter and planned for the next three cycles in the supply chain. Todays market is neither unforeseen or unexpected.

If you have gathered some powder you have done well. Happy loading during the coming year.

Yesterday on the way home from work I stopped in at a store not expecting to see any pistol powders but picked up a pound of W231.

Today I stopped in at another LGS, expecting to find something but didn't. So I left empty handed. He did have some VV340, 700 & 800X, WST, WSF, BE and Unique. I passed as I have enough powder to last a while, a good long while. But I want to increase my inventory levels on W231/HP-38, Titegroup (keg volumes), Americal Select and Clays (once it becomes easy to get). I have some AA#5 on backorder and will wait for however long it takes. I'm good powder wise and have been handloading for just a year.

Those powders you listed will also load most of the calibers for which you said you only shot factory ammo.

In October of 2008 I was contemplating the purchase of a new handgun and panic bought my favorite powder and primers. While I've picked up a few single cans of powder to experiment with I probably have enough Bullseye, 231 and Unique for the foreseeable future.

I just reload .38 Special and .45 ACP so keep a stock of Bullseye and Win 231/HP 38 on hand. That works for me.

Bullseye, and Auto-Comp cover me for 40, 38, and 357.
I do keep AA-9 for heavy 44 mag loads.

one good thing about the shortages is that one is quickly forced off the traditional reservation of 231, unique, bulseye, and the rest of the old standbys to take a few of the new kids on the block out for a test drive.

Not much will get Unique to budge off its hard earned spot on my shelf, but some of the new stuff is worth doing some reevaluation.
CFE Pistol is one such powder. While its copper fowling abatement thing might be pointless, its ability to make top velocities in autos deserves some recognition.
Power Pistol, BE86, and other powders are also earning places....

I would add to your list American Select

I currently have powder, primers and ammo stored in a climate controlled basement in a special built gun room with Browning Safe Door installed when we built our home. I have 18 different powders and 11 different primers.

Oh and big blue- Dillon RL-550B
