Participated in the stock revolver class of the monthly PPC matchs at Harrisburg Hunters & Anglers yesterday. Match 1 and 2 were with Model 14, matches 3 and 4 were with 6” Model 28 and final Match was Concealed Carry with 2 1/2” Model 66.

This was first time I shot the 28 in PPC. Shot the 28 within a few points of the 14. Different feel to the 28. Need to shoot it more matches. The range master said he hardly saw the 28’s muzzle move with the light 38 loads😊

It was a fun match. Time to load more 38’s.

I had many a good time at Harrisburg H&A field days. Have a bunch of trophies. Used to have two a year - are they still doing that? I think my friend is a life member there.

Adios,

Bob, Harrisburg conducts one field day per year. None this year due to COVID restrictions. They had 51 shooters at the PPC match.
Another local club, Lebanon County Police Combat Pistol Club also conducts monthly PPC shoots, including 1500 matches. Plenrty of revolver shooters at both clubs.

Wow. Shot a lot of PPC in the early 90’s.
Still have my old competition gun. Took first place in Governor’s twenty for my state in 1992 and 1995. Lots of good times. No one around here shoots it any more.

I envy you your day on the pistol range!

I really enjoyed shooting PPC. I shot on two different PD pistol teams for close to 10 years and brought home my share of trophies, guns and even a state championship and a few Governor's 10 aggregate awards from state level matches. I guess we shot on average of about 5 big matches a year and we had weekly practice sessions on the PD's ranges.

I still have an open class PPC revolver in the safe as well as my old Model 14 service class revolver.

I feel fortunate to live in Central PA where we have a wide range of competitive shooting opportunities. Also participate in a local 10 team Bullseye League during Winter months. Enjoy shooting my Model 41. So I don’t get too comfortable, I also shoot in a Winter Trap League. Can be a little cool at times...

That is a beautiful (dare I say sexy) PPC revolver! Who built it for you?

I don't recall the name, but it was the gun shop north of Whidbey Island Naval Air Station (Washington State) on Monkey Hill Rd. It's been years, and the memory is apparently going.

My best ever PPC revolver was built by Royce Weddle in Oklahoma. Another good PPC builder was Fred Schmidt in Virginia. He built my IPSC 45 auto for me and also built PPC revolvers for brother officers on the team.

I imagine that all of these guys are either retired or passed by now.

I competed for about a decade. Brought home trophies, medals and guns. Lots of fun but it was serious shooting. Lots of camaraderie also. I managed to shoot my way into the Governor’s 20 but never into the top 10. The competition was very stiff at that level.

My revolver was a Model 64-3, rebuilt by Davis. For the Distinguished leg I used a 6”, 686. For the Service or Duty leg, I shot either a Model -5-2 or a 4”, 686. My Model 36-1 got me to the top in the Off Duty leg.

I remember in the early 80's there would be over 900 shooters at the National Police Revolver Championships. Now National Police Shooting Championships around 300 these days. Its back in Mississippi these days , I would like to go and shoot all the service gun events. Not competitive enough to do the 1500 opens these days. Still have these 3 sitting in the safe may have to have a range day soon , forgot how easy they are to shoot.

CALREB,

On my Davis PPC revolver, the front sight is adjustable for preset elevations. On yours, it appears to have a knob that adjusts the rear sight. I don’t see one being significantly more advanced than the other but who did the work on those?

Kevin

Aristocrat made both sight ribs. The Davis Front Adjust was designed, or suggested, by Bill Davis. It is no longer in production.

We may have met in late 2004 at Pearl!

I too was able to earn Distinguished points, State Class Championships and National Recognition in Open Revolver and Semi Auto classes.

Before retiring and moving to WA I was a member of the Riverside Sheriff's Pistol Team. I wanted to meet the guys from WA and remember Dave Workman but not the other guys.

I thought I'd continue shooting PPC after moving but life happened! I sold my Davis Windmaster and Tanaka Open guns to guys at the Honolulu P.D. and my PPC9 to a guy in Seattle.
I kept my Distinguished M14 action set up by Jim Clark Sr.!

I went back to Action Pistol Games for 15 years and now retired from competition completely. Except for Gallery Bulls Eye!

Shooting PPC was amazing! The quality of shooters from CA was outstanding! One year there were several of us competing for "Top Gun" in Open Revolver separated by only 1-2 points!. After 10 matches and at the state championships I was able to squeak by, winning with an average 54 X's to another shooter with the same average but averaging 53 X's! :)

Every CA match meant shooting against 5 previous National Champions! Fortunately my Department sponsored the top six highest scoring shooters with expenses and ammo!

After retiring here I developed a "PPC" league! "Practical Pistol Competition" for beginning and intermediate shooters. I also used my learned skills from PPC and POST Certification to help develop new shooters. My "pay it forward return on "investment"!

Smiles,

Strawhat, I owned several of the front adjustable, in the early days. I still have 1 . I personally think the front sight provides a better sight picture on the rear adjustable, because its not tilted back. And holds the setting better, I was always putting loc-tite on the front adj, and making sure it was all the way in the right slot. But shooters like them both .Like KAC said they dont make the front adj any more.
Hi Al, glad to see you made it out of CA....

I started out with the front adjustable, but somewhere along the way mine became automatically self adjusting from recoil. That can be a little rough on the score when it changes during a string of fire. I ended up going to the Wichita Rib designed by Ron Power and made by Wichita Arms. Still have a 686 and a 625 with those on them.

CALREB, If this virus is over and done by September 2021 I plan on attending the NPSC. The range in Pearl is very nice, a lot more concrete than the Jackson range. Hope to see you there. Yes, AZ is a heckuva lot better than CA, I'm sure Texas is as well.

KAC: Shooting at Jackson NPSC!!

Were you at Jackson around 2000 when we had the "monsoon", everything flooded? Had to blow raindrops off of sights and prone was really special laying in a few inches of water! If you stood at the correct angle you could see vapor trails as the bullets left the barrel and all the way to the targets!

Smiles,

Yep, 2002. Was interesting to watch the fire ants float by while the shooting was going on. Carbide smoke wouldn't stay on the sights, had to use a black Sharpie. Ah, fun times!
