I have shot on the range shown. Its the Miss.Highway Patrol Academy in Jackson Miss. until the early 80"s the NRA national PPC champsonships were held there. its a beautiful range with 60 position turning targets and a very large range house. Brings back memories.

I haven't shot on that range since 2004, didn't get to go in 2005 because of Katrina. I will be at the Mississippi Highway Patrol Academy in three weeks for their PPC match. It is always a pleasure shooting with (against) Phillip and his team.

I wonder if the MS Conservation Officers will be putting on their ctafish fry like they used to do during the Nationals? They sure do cook up some tasty catfish.

Boy, his revolver has one BIG barrel. It looks like it might be 1 1/2" or so. I wonder who his gunsmith is? Allen Tanaka was making some of the PPC shooters guns as of late.

Dwight,

The gunsmith who built Phillip's gun is Mr. Bob Jones of Jackson, MS. Phillip's gun has either a 1 3/8" or 1 1/2" diameter barrel. My Jones built guns have 1 3/8" barrels and weigh in at 6.5 pounds unloaded. If I ever wear out my revolvers I'll probably have Mr. Jones build one with a 1 1/4" to shave a little weight off.

This guy has a fantastic track record. He is probably the greatest PPC shooter that has ever lived. I believe the NRA made a huge mistake when they went from std. service revolvers to custom bull-barrel guns that had no relation to police street use. Our team shot at Jackson Miss. years ago and we used S&W model 15 4 inch bbl. - stock guns. Only the grips were changed to fit each shooter. All the other teams used stock guns as well. Everyone on equal footing. Even speedloaders were unheard of at that time. (1972) The scores were lower than they are today, however this is due to the influx of "custom guns". The competition was just as tough all the way around. Ask anyone who was there. BTW, the US Border Patrol took first place in 1972. Mighty good team.

I've emailed Phillip to see if he would join us on this great forum...see if he can help us out on some of his shooting styles and knowledge.
We have some great men and women here already but a good guy like Phillip would be an asset ...I have a mutal friend of Phillps to contact him for us....we shall see

Very interesting clip...I shot the national matches at Jackson from the early days. The Jackson, Ms Police dept used to put on a warm up match the day before,a great week of shooting. The scores went up fast as the revolvers got better,we used stock revolvers with no speed loaders(loaded from belt loop). My first PPC revolver built on a model 10..heavy barrel.. 1-12 twist by Ray Steel the SS gunsmith... Hemphill is a top bullseye shooter also...

I have known Phillip for many years. He is not only a top notch shooter, but a great coach and trainer. If you listen to him,you will improve. I think when he took off in 2008,someone rattled his cage, and brought him back. He definitely represents Mississippi and our Highway Patrol well.

Any contact information for Mr. Jones?

I've seen Phil at the Nationals (conventional pistol) for the last few years. I scored him a couple of years ago in the revolver matches and he had shot the national record for the match. Shooting double action of all things. This year he won on conditions that were pretty miserable, even for Perry.

I was shooting my Dad's pre-27 and running smooth single action the entire way. Phil was running a stainless L-frame with a really nice trigger job and tune.
