This is my Ron Powers Custom. Model 13 with 6" Douglas, Bomar Rib, DAO hammer (smooth as butter action), trigger stop set, and originally had Hogue grips which he modified to allow adjustment of the set screw retaining the stress screw. Thus allowing adjusting for hard primers. Ron requested only .38spl be shot in the firearm. Way beyond accurate. Used it in Police PPC completion and Missouri Police Olympics. Still have the open front holster (Safariland I believe) somewhere. This was made when he had his shop in his basement in Independence, MO.

Lifetime guarantee Ron stated UNLESS I ever took off the sideplate! Ron was a giant of a man but extremely nice.

Some one had a 6" .32 PPC bbl for sale and it got the gears going. Since I have 2 other 32 longs, a 32 PPC would be neat with a 5" bbl and adjustable sights with no rib on top. I have a worn K-22 that would be perfect, HHHMMMM? I liked this thread. Larry

this was my favorite when i shot PPC in the 70's ~~~ model 14-3, Bomar winged rib, Behlert action job with combat trigger, Armalloyed by Behlert, Rogers combat grips

owned a couple of custom bull barrels and a tricked out slab sided Python, but always went back to this one

I have to admit that I don't know. The PPC guns belong to my father, who shot for a California department in the '70s. I always thought the short barrel model was just his perverse sense of humor (he also has a 4" model that he actually carried on duty - see below), but I've read that there were "backup gun" matches. Perhaps it was for one of those.

As far as I know, it was built by Bill Davis.

I don't know much about this 15-3. It has a ball lock/detent in the crane and weighs 56 oz. The rib seems to be just a normal scope mount that was designed for S&W's because it has a screw hole that matches up to the rear sight screw. It is attached to the barrel with 3 screws. Its SAO and the trigger breaks at 1.5 lbs. It is very accurate. The grip really helps with the heavy front end. It's not quite at the level of sophistication of the guns pictured earlier in the thread. I added the trigger stop . Pencil eraser, Duco cement, adjusted with emery board.

This thread has brought back a TON of memories - all good, too!! If I were shooting PPC today, I believe I would be competitive with my nearly stock 6" 686-4 (all else being equal), or at least my GUN would be competitive. Back in the day, a few of the more affluent shooters did quite well with a stock Python. Some had a Smithon built (a Smith revolver with a Python barrel). I'm a bit surprised I didn't see one in this thread. At any rate, the full underlugged barrel of a stock 686 gives the extra barrel weight desired for better holding and recoil recovery (even with the light wadcutter loads used, less recoil is always better)...

Oh well, speculation as those days are pretty much gone, anyway...

PPC Gun

A real economy-grade PPC gun made from a Model 14 with a Bomar Rib and sights, Mustang Grips, action job, target hammer, trigger shoe and my .38 wadcutter handloads. That was about all this former Louisiana deputy sheriff could afford back in the day.

PPC guns are great fun to shoot even if you do not compete. They also do not have to be expensive. The pictured K38 was bought for $315. I also have 2 6" L frames with geat trigger jobs.

Notice that most all the S&W PPC revolvers are sporting non-factory barrels. Custom heavy barrel with a 1 in 12 or 1 in 14 twist.

The reason is that the factory Model 14 barrel is not very accurate out to fifty yards. They were 1 in 18 3/4 and would cause the bullet to yaw at 50 yards. Some worse than others. I have seen some that would strike the B-27 target almost sideways.

A Bit Contrarian

Because this is what I use to shoot at the club PPC matches:

Other than the grips, it's a stock Model 19-4. Well, I did paint the front sight orange in order to be more visible when held on the silhouette targets.

There is a guy who shoots a 1911 who, for a 48-shot match, will put maybe five or six shots into the nine ring. All the rest are 10s or Xs.

So far, I can't beat him.

But I can beat everyone else. At least some of the time.

I don't actually have it yet (on the way next week) but here is a picture of my Model-10 sent by Renee at Clark Custom Guns. It's got the new Aristocrat Sight Rib with built in Weaver style base.
