I've been thinking about getting involved in PPC. I've done the TPC in Albuquerque several times for just a fun day shooting and I always think about doing the PPC but never get around to it. But now I wanted to go ahead with it. I've read a little about it and I see a lot of discussion on custom built "PPC guns" and this sight over that sight and a gun for this, gun for that. Knowing that I'm not going out for a first place finish specifically...is it all really necessary for just starting out? I mean, am I going to have a horrible time if I show up with my duty 13 year old Kimber Classic Custom for the open SA, Dist. SA, and stock SA; my Kimber Ultra for the off duty SA, and my S&W mod 66 for the revolver stuff? Seems like this Police Pistol Combat, is not so much. If I can't put it in a duty holster and roll with it, I don't own one. I love shooting outside of departmental training but I'm not much of a gamer. The rules seem pretty straight forward to me but I read a lot of people getting heartburn over different things, like entering the "new shooter" thing, when the guy isn't really a "new shooter." So basically I'm just looking for opinions from people who have btdt. Thanks,

Most challenging game I've tried. Excellent opportunity to shoot under pressure and master the DA trigger. Do it.

Brandon,

They have regular local matches at the ABQ range (might be monthly) and there are also monthly matches at the Whittington Center in Raton. I believe Larry Malin puts on the ABQ matches and last year in October they had a match, might possible have one again this year.

http://nmshootnra.com/docs/NMPPCA2011Match.pdf is a link to last year's final match, you'll find Larry's contact info in the flyer.

Most of the new shooter heartburn is in relation to the NPSC since they started re-classing shooters who have not attended the NPSC for more than 3 years as "new shooters". You won't have to worry about this getting started. Larry, Andy and/or Kevin will help you along.

Hope this helps

Check around for different clubs.
My current club runs a summer league where the 50 yd is from 25yds and there are no separate classes (which i'm trying to get them to start). A few guys got together and added a snubbie class.

The we we do it is we shoot every wed night, up to 4 matches a night. A 'season' is 20 matches, best 16 scores count to your average. You can shoot ahead as far as you want but if you fall behind too bad, you can't 'shoot behind'. Practice matches can be shot anytime, just not before a scored match on teh same night.

Then the season ending event is the "law enforcement invitational" in early sept and that is shot from 7,25, and 50 yards. My avg for the season was about (i'll find out at the banquet next month) 512. The LEO was shot in a bad rain this year so that hurt scores a bit. My best of 3 was a 432. 50 yards is a challenge.

Our top seasonal shooters avg 588 or better, and we've had guys do 598.
For LEO our top shooter (MP9mm season avg of 592, snubbie avg 587) shot 582. Yeah, cream always rises to the top.

People shot a wide variety of 'service' weapons. 686 6" with 148WC/2.7Gr bullseye is "the" load, but some folks shoot 45s, 9, colt revolvers, etc.

I'd like a narrower notch on the back of my XDm9-5.25 for those 50 yard distances and the bright red fiber optic front isn't great either - black, smoked sights are VERY VERY popular. They end up blacker than the B27 target. My sights are probably great for IPSC or IDPA.

Adj sights are needed so you can 'shoot the sights'. I don't think you need to invest in PPC specific sights (with settings for 25 and 50yd distances). Target loads don't drop that much even at 50 yards.

Cost is $60 for the season club member or not. Overall avg of everyone shooting is 550 or so. A few guys are in the 300s. Practice helps TREMENDOUSLY!
The season ending LEI is $20 and includes a steak cookout and beer afterwards.

Another club has a weeky indoor PPC - 48 rounds (no prone/sit) from 7, 25 and 50 feet on the B27. Last I was there it was informal - show up and pay $2 or whatever and shoot.

MKT,
Yes I was definitely going to look into the NMPPCA. Abq is pretty easy for me, Raton is quite a drive for a day's worth of shooting. Thanks for that info as well, PF.
