Practicing a new language lately?

since I recently retired, I need to get a part time job, was thinking about a conveniece store, but will have to learn Arabic so I can talk to the boss

I'm pretty fluent in southern english, but I get absolutely sick at the sound of New Joisey accents. I guess that should be called Yankee English.
Dick, that is a bald-faced lie and very hurtful!

You would be amazed at the difference a few hundred miles north latitude makes. Jersey/NY is different from Ma, which is different from NH/VT which is different from Me. You paint with too broad a brush.

You haven't been to Maine, maybe? Some pretty hickish towns there, especially up north.

Gawd love 'em. The more north you get, the better the folks get?

In the small town I grew up in, the local (well in the next town 10 miles south) radio station broadcast in English in the Morning and Spanish afternoons, and rock and roll at night.

I still remember Ramon Montemayor, the announcer doing the classifieds one afternoon:

"De vende, un camioneta pickup, es un one owner en good shape".

(At that time, camioneta was local slang for a station wagon)

Another:

"Ahora vamos a tocar un poquito de rrrrrrrock y roll"

I grew up multilingual: South Texas English, Tex-Mex and written English & Spanish.

In later years, thanks to travels furnished by my employers, I advanced my skills so that I was able to order a beer in 5 languages...
