Recently I remember reading that early 44 magnum cylinders had a different diameter than later ones. Anyone have the low down on this. I have a #169xxx that is the same diameter as my 1970's ones. If they were, what was the measurement and time frame of change. Thanks in advance

Directive #465 was issued by S&W on January 3, 1956 to change the O.D. of the NT-430 cylinder from 1.722 inches to 1.715 inches in order to keep the cylinder from rubbing on the top strap and side of the frame when opened. This change was implemented in February 1956 with less than twenty 44 Magnums being produced with the larger O.D. cylinder.

Were those guns with the 1.722" cylinders shipped, or were they withheld by the factory? Just curious Doc44.

That is a difference of 7 thousandths. That means it only moved the side of the cylinder 3-1/2 thousandths farther away from the topstrap and frame. The hair in my beard mikes at 3 thousandths. That ain't much more clearance!

Don't know how to post a "Missed it by that much" Meme from Get Smart. But a miss is a miss :)
