Pre 37 Date

I was wondering if someone can tell me the date of a pre 37 flat latch s#106xxx? And are most pre models prior to 1957? Thank you in advance.

That particular Airweight should date to right about 1957, the year in which S&W started marking their products with model numbers.

All pre models are prior to 1957 but not all guns before 1957 are pre models. Pre models are only guns that immediately preceeded the Model stamped guns and are in the same configuration.

For example: You have a Model of 1953 Airweight Chief Special which is a Pre model 37. They are virtually the same gun. Some will argue the 4 screw is not a pre model but the 3 screw is; that's splittin' hairs IMHO.

An Airweight Chief Special made in 1952 is a Pre Model of 1953 because it is not like yours. It has the I frame trigger guard, grip frame and 5 screws.

I know; SCSW is contradictory on this issue. 3rd edition Pg. 153 Bullet #4 is much more precise than the conflicting 'pre model' in the Index pg. 423 and other text.
