Pre-Model 10?

I believe your friends 38 Military & Police (pre-model 10) should have a letter "C" prefix to the serial number and would date mid-to-late 1948. From just that one picture it appears to be in excellent condition and is a very desirable early post-WWII example worth $450 to $500.

I'm sooooo dumb!
I need to re-check the SN - I took that from the yoke, like I do on modern S&Ws, and forgot to look at the base of the grip frame.
Or should it not be on there on an older M&P?

You got an assembly number, not a SN. It is probably a C(something) SN.
That's a sweet looking M&P. And the SN is???

Yes, yes, of course it is an assembly number. What a jerk I am. I am so used to my newer guns having SNs on the base of the butt AND the yoke I totally forgot the fact it wasn't always that way. Flog me later!
The SN is C 270545.
Post 1948 pre-Model 10 is what I make it.
Still probably worth in the 400 to 500 dollar range but stop me if I'm wrong.

Based on several known ship dates near your s/n, I'd estimate a mid to late 1953 ship date.

The closest SN I have listed is about 2000 lower than yours, and that one shipped in December 1953.

1953 sounds right. My buddy's dad was a traveling salesman back in the day and often bought guns as he drove around the South. He might have even bought this M&P brand new!
