. . . 4" barrel, .38 Special, SN 16114. Does this piece have any particular value? It appears to be in very nice shape. Just curious; it's a friend's gun.
I believe your friends 38 Military & Police (pre-model 10) should have a letter "C" prefix to the serial number and would date mid-to-late 1948. From just that one picture it appears to be in excellent condition and is a very desirable early post-WWII example worth $450 to $500.
Yes, yes, of course it is an assembly number. What a jerk I am. I am so used to my newer guns having SNs on the base of the butt AND the yoke I totally forgot the fact it wasn't always that way. Flog me later!

Still probably worth in the 400 to 500 dollar range but stop me if I'm wrong.
1953 sounds right. My buddy's dad was a traveling salesman back in the day and often bought guns as he drove around the South. He might have even bought this M&P brand new!
